DCC residents - what are your plans for high school?

We are happy with Blair. We looked at privates because our child has some specific needs that we thought might be easier to manage in a smaller school but I am glad that child chose Blair.

The reality which has been repeatedly explained in this forum. is the quality of education is consistent across schools in MCPS. I know W parent's hate hearing this but a simple average doesn't reflect a school's quality but measures an area's overall affluence. School's with higher poverty have lower averages. It's really that simple, but it doesn't mean there aren't plenty of bright kids at those schools too. Any school with 2000 students will have an adequate peer group for anyone. The teachers and curriculum are also exactly the same at all these schools. Bottom line is your fine at any of them.

Blair ranks higher than Einstein but if you moved the magnet into Einstein then Einstein would rank higher than Blair. Even though non-magnet Blair kids aren't doing any better than Einstein kids, Blair families would revolt if they were rezoned into Einstein or Wheaton. Einstein scores much higher than Kennedy. Einstein families would revolt if they were rezoned into Kennedy.

Why you W parents are so obsessed with Blair?
Yes you're a W parent.

W parents are obsessed with Blair because they realize that using simple averages like GS only serves to identify which high-schools draw a higher percentage of rich kids. A better, refined analysis looks at the granular data. When you isolate for race which is proxy a for socioeconomic status there is not much of a disparity between the performance of kids of the same backgrounds across these schools. For example, when you compare average SAT scores for MCPS schools for a larger demographic (greater than 5%), the great schools narrative begins to fall apart and it becomes clear they're not all that different.

Blair 1326
Walter Johnson 1275
Wooton 1262
Churchill 1257
Wheaton 1173
Einstein 1148

Just FYI - a 200 point difference on SAT scores is quite a bit

Holy cow. The average SAT of the public high school I went to is 1778, with 76% of students taking it. I just looked it up. I guess I need to readjust my expectations for schools for my kid.

Average SAT scores at my former high school in flyover country are higher than MoCo schools as well.

These scores are on the new SAT with 1600 scale. If your flyover country school has higher averages, they are an anomaly.

The scores shown here are out of 1600. The flyover one is the dated 2400 point version

it's sad but true, W parents are able to provide their children private tutors, while schools that has students from humble beginnings must work twice as hard.

On the contrary - with all the money I saved on housing as a DCC parent I can afford much better tutors than the house poor W parents.
