I just did it again and now it's the start of rush hour and Ashburn is still 45min, Bowie is 42min. For a locati9n that's 12 miles closer that sounds like a major infrastructure problem. Waze says the samenthing. I find waze extremely accurate. |
Well, it's not. Do a simple google map or waze search. That factors in traffic. |
It's all about what time you leave.
Honestly arguing about commuting is stupid. If you have children at least one of your commutes takes 30 minutes longer because you have drop off or pick up - and by time your kids are actually ready to leave you're annoyed anyway. So who the fuck cares |
And yes Bowie is actually very beautiful and affordable.
Most people in VA want you to believe anything outside of their bubble is subpar. Btw- 50 is not the only way to get into the district from Bowie. |
Whitehall Elementary, Samuel Ogle Middle are both very good schools. If I were to move to Bowie I would target that area. |
The reason people here like to trash pg county is because the high prices their own homes command are based on their low inventory/scarcity, and the scarcity is based on the fact that a huge swath of the immediate DC suburbs is viewed as not a viable option for white middle class families.
As soon as (white) people are let in on the secret that pg county is totally nice, that supply of housing will flood the market and depress prices in places like Rockville or ashburn. So people have a vested interest in maintaining the perception of pg as a crappy area with crappy schools. That's fine with me! Enjoy your half million dollar mortgages, long commutes and schools ranked worse than mine ![]() |
But your commute is longer and you don't have higher ranked schools so help me understand your sarcasm? |
I agree! It would be laughable the ignorant things say about PG county if they weren't so insulting and racist. |
Mid-day, according to Google Maps, it's 35 minutes from Baysox Stadium to Union Station (driving Rt. 50). MARC is a 20-22 minute ride from Bowie Station to Union Station (free parking, too, I believe).
Mid-day, according to Google Maps, it's 50 minutes from Ashburn to Union Station. And that route depends on I-66 which isn't available during rush hour unless you HOV. When Metro gets to Loudon County it will be close to 1:15 to take the silver line from Ashburn to downtown DC. I like Crofton a little better than Bowie, but Bowie is a legitimate place to buy a house, and I have several friends who have advanced degrees, have children, and live in Bowie. |
My commute to downtown is 18 minutes (mount rainier) and my kids go to a magnet school that is a 9. But please, tell me about your 10 school and 15 minute commute! |
Your commute from Mount Rainier to downtown is 18 minutes??? Do you have a space shuttle? |
Your commute from Mount Rainier to downtown is 18 minutes??? Do you have a space shuttle? |
I leave early, around 7, and I drive, but yes, 18 minutes.
On the way home, on a typical day it's more like 25-30. Accidents, construction etc can make it longer. But that's not an exaggeration. I truly time it every day. |
I like Bowie and have several friends there. They have had good experiences with elementary and middle schools (esp. with the TAG program).... but isn't the issue with Bowie the High schools? That seems to be what they talk about -- must get into Roosevelt or else figure out a way to pay for private HS. They don't seem to be willing to consider public school even though they have been in public school since the beginning or at least since 2nd grade. |
NP. Do you even know where Mount Rainier is? It's directly adjacent to DC. You could get to a lot of DC in 5 minutes from Mount Rainier. |
