It’s pretty raunchy, lol. There are short clips circulating on Twitter.

I decided to read the books first. I am not a prude, but oh my this is graphic M/M sex. I'm not hating it...

While the sex in the show isn’t gentle per se, I love how gentle and tender they are with each other. Often kissing, Ilya always touching his face and lifting his chin up for eye contact, checking on him if this or that is ok, if he is scared, if he still wants it. Asking for consent and then doing raunchy stuff is hot! I wish more hetero men would watch the show because it is a case study in what women find attractive and arousing too.

It was written by a woman for a largely female audience. Female viewership of HBOMax went from 48 or percent to almost 70 with the success of the show. A lot of M/M romance isn’t written for or by men, but for and by women.

Genuinely curious and this is probably gonna get deleted but do straight women genuinely get off on this? I'm watching right now. It's entertaining but it's not hot.

Why wouldn’t they? A lot of what these men do to each other can be done in a hetero relationship too. Not everything, but most of it. The actors are hot and sell the sexual tension well in the show, plus the intimacy scenes are filmed very well, so I can see how this is a turn on for straight people too.

Is this actually a turn on for gay men? It's so obviously written for women.

I just watched a HR reaction video with Dan and Phil (gay British YouTube couple). They really liked it.

Everyone really likes it because it gets them views / engagement. All these reaction videos are planned - they read what people want to hear online and then make those points in their reactions. They know that liking it is what gets engagement now so they are riding that train.

There is a large dscussion forum that is mostly gay men and they all agree that Ilyas body and backside are incredible. They like Shane / Scott and Kips too. The majority of their discussion is about the ass, trying to zoom in and see the hole, the bodies! Many of them liked the Kip and Scott storyline better than the Ilya / Shane one and thought it was more relatable for gay men. Many comments that it is written for women and not gay men and doesn't really reflect gay men experience (all the Grindr hook ups, 3somes, open relationships, sex just for the sake of sex, turn on of bodies, butts and d@@ks). They acknowledged that the whole two men falling in love, being lovey dovey and all about feelings, being exclusive, getting married, living happily ever after with eyes only for each other happens but is pretty rare and not at all typically of the experince of most gay men. Most of them were happy it had gotten so much mainstream attention and enjoyed the eye candy!

This is such homophobic drivel. Do you know gay men irl? I do. Just like straight people, they fall in love, get married, have kids and monogamous relationships. They are definitely not the sex-obsessed degenerates you describe (unlike the straights on Epstein’s list).

The show is awesome. The actors are gorgeous and did an excellent job conveying all sorts of emotions. It’s a story of love, something all human beings - regardless of gender, religion or sexual orientation- crave and can relate to.

It isn't homophobic drivel - it is from a gay men's discussion forum. I get that doesn't fit your view and you prefer to think they live like Harlequin romance novels in real life but it doesn't change the right of gay men to have opinions about themselves! Erasing the opinions of gay men about gay men because you think you as a woman know better is kind of ironic! The actors are gorgeous - no disputes there.

Go read the relationship forum and see how many women describe their husbands as emotionally intelligent and intuitive romantics who love physical affection and deep talks and sharing feelings by the fire. Go read about how women and men see sex differently.

I can’t believe this show was made on a budget of a couple of million. It’s better than shows ten times its budget. The actors and music in particular are so so good! I loved it.

Ilya and Shane are f’ck buddies for years, seeing each other 3-4 times per year, only when their teams have games in the same town. Eventually, after years of that, they catch feelings. How is that unrealistic? It’s more common than you think.
P.s. They never really had deep talks.

OMG, you mean gay men aren't a monolith and some might not like a show that features some gay characters?

LOL

BTW, the publisher of the book series IS Harlequin (one of their imprints). There's a reason Harlequin is still in business while others have faded away. When Harper Collins bought them, they maintained the imprint because it's a strong name in the marketplace.

On some level, this question is hilarious to me, considering the massive amount of gay fan fiction written by women that is available on the internet. It’s like Hollywood has simply no idea what female audiences like.

+1. Timothee Chalamet was in a beautifully shot gay movie and he became an Oscar nominee at 22. The audience for this kind of thing is huge.

Sigh, Yes. Call me by your name. That's my favorite movie of all time and the only one I've watched more than a half dozen times.

I am 33, straight and obsessed. So is my gay brother. On my third re-watch this weekend!
We are all in the cottage, sister.

Y'all, it is really not THAT good lol. It's enjoyable but a third rewatch in a month is crazy.

Try 9 times. One for every….😜

I never said they didn’t like the show. Yes it’s a Harlequin romance novel - hockey smut genre. It isn’t real, it is fiction. Hence it has a lot of fictional aspects to appeal to the intended audience of straight women.

Awesome show. I was skeptical given some of the sex scene mentions online, but I was very invested after 15 minutes and weeping hysterically at the end of Episode 5. Recommended the series to my friends, and they all feel the same.
Anonymous
Their chemistry and great acting make the scenes so intimate that it not only looks real but FEELS real, and I think some of you are confusing that feeling with it being graphic. I didn’t find the show graphic, just sexy. In particular the way Ilya/Connor kisses is very hot.

Romance stories are often fantasy for the reader. This one is set in a world where the hockey community isn't as horrible as the one we know. (Though in future books, they characters deal with the nasty NHL commissioner.) We already discussed this in the thread. You may be new here, but scroll back a bit!

It is fresh faces who are good actors (and willing to do anything) and hot bodies. But I don't get people crying over fantasy hockey smut. It is like men crying over porn!

Did you watch the show? It’s hard for me to imagine someone getting through the entire thing and still thinking it’s just porn with zero plot or character development. People cry when they care about a character or their situation. And like it or not, people like these characters. It’s as simple as that.

I mean the storytelling and directing is obviously a lot better than porn but women care about those things a lot more than men. So porn doesn't need it. Both are similar in providing fantasy based smut in a way that appeals more to each sex.

People caring about Harlequin romance novel smutty characters to the point of crying makes no sense to me. The writing in the books is very weak. The director and actors did a great job given the weak writing but it is still porn for straight women - with the qualities that make it appeal to women. Watch it and enjoy it for what it is but to get carried away - I mean I guess men rewatch some porn repeatedly too if they really enjoy the fantasy and smut it creates but crying over it?

Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams are to women what Mia Khalifa and Lana Rhoades are to men.
