Representative Kevin Kiley, the California Republican who has been one of the most vocal opponents of Proposition 50, said in a statement that the election “fell well short of the ideals we ought to strive for in our democratic process,” and that he would continue to fight partisan gerrymandering. Mr. Kiley’s district becomes competitive for Democrats under the new map.

Did Republicans flip any Democrat seats tonight? Seems like an incredibly bad night for them.

After starting the gerrymandering war in Texas, now beaten Republicans are crying for fair and impartial maps. Idiots.

And having Republicans spend billions in a failed attempt to bail out Argentina while letting 14 million Americans lose their health care. Who knew?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the Democratic Party is “in its ascendancy” after candidates swept key races in several states today, including passing a ballot measure that allows California to redraw its congressional map.

“But it was not just a victory tonight for the Democratic Party, it was a victory for the United States of America, for the people of this country and the principles that our founding fathers lived and died for,” Newsom said.

Newsom said the election results sent a powerful message to President Donald Trump, whom he described as “the most historically unpopular president in modern history.”

Mamdani addresses Trump in victory speech: "Turn the volume up"
From CNN's Tori B. Powell
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has four words for President Donald Trump: “Turn the volume up.”

“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,” Mamdani said.

During a speech celebrating his projected win, Mamdani vowed to “usher in a generation of change” rejecting the president’s politics. By embracing that change, he said, “we respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves.”

With California set to redraw its congressional maps to boost Democrats’ efforts to win control of the US House next year, Gov. Gavin Newsom called on other states to take their own measures to take back the majority.

“We need to see other states, the remarkable leaders that have been doing remarkable things, meet this moment head on as well, to recognize what we’re up against in 2026,” Newsom said, naming states including Virginia, Maryland and New York.
