+1. This is the case for both SAHMs I know who drive one of the vehicles OP mentioned or similar (Rivian SUV). |
So you are saying you personally know 20 women who made 500K in their 20s during the 90s? |
No, she said that by early 30s they were making 1 mil around 30 years ago. And that would maybe be 2 mil in todays dollars. This forum is getting ridiculous. |
Yes, it’s crazy how we’ve never heard of these anomalous 1980s women making $2M at 32 while pregnant with their third child and taking care of a 4 year old and 2 year old. |
No, come on, this is crazy. I get a lot of family money but it doesn’t come in the form of cars. It comes as trusts, cash gifts (really just because of the annual exemption) and specific categories like tuition, also related to estate taxes. Even though a lot of my assets come from family, if I wanted to buy a car everyone would assume I would use those assets, which are already mine. I guess except for the trusts. But those aren’t my parents’ assets either. |
The DCUM real estate subforum discusses plenty of neighborhoods where houses for families with 3 kids cost $1MM-$2MM+. That is a mortgage payment of $5K-$10K+.
The BLS consumer expenditure survey shows that transportation costs about half as much as housing. So two $80,000 vehicles with $1,200-$2,000 monthly payments is not out of line with housing costs. |
So if you use those "assets" that your parents gift you, you are using your parents money to purchase the vehicle. Not that difficult to understand. |
+1. Most who drive $80k plus vehicles do not own companies nor work as executives for companies who provide a car allowance perk. Most just love expensive luxury cars in the same manner they lavishly spend on homes, vacations, handbags, private school, etc. Their companies don’t subsidize such luxury items - cars are in the same boat. Many of the lower level workers in my company drive the most expensive cars. Go figure…. |
Off-topic, but in my dreams only would a $1MM house at today’s interests equal a $5K monthly payment. Easily double |
Family money. Though all think they are self-made. |
Keeping up with jones |
If you are in the income bracket to have a $2 mil house and you still have a car payment you are doing something wrong. |
I just bought a $90k suv. The lease payment is only $1200, not even close to $2000. |
We make $500k with no debt or college costs looming and a paid off house. We’d never spend more than $40k on a car at most. |
