‘Trump Slump’ Looms as Foreign Visitors Rethink Travel to U.S.

Anonymous
Anonymous wrote:“ The research firm Tourism Economics had originally forecast travel to the United States to grow by 9 percent this year, but in February, it updated its outlook, expecting inbound travel to decline by 5.1 percent and hotel demand to decline by 0.8 percent in 2025 — the equivalent of an $18 billion drop in spending. Much of the decline is the result of a boycott by Canadian travelers. In February, after President Trump announced tariffs on Canada, the number of Canadians driving across the border fell by 24 percent compared with the same period in 2024.”

I was just in Canada. They are seeing lots of American tourists.

When politics came up, they were amazingly gracious.

Actions have consequences. Canadians have been the biggest supporters of the US, content to be the “little guy” except in hockey, and represent the largest number of travellers to the US. The tariffs were annoying, and now it doesn’t feel safe to enter.

Why ANYONE would choose FL over Portugal is a mystery. But especially now. If I were foreign, and esp. brown skinned foreign, there is zero chance I'd step foot in the US. As much as I hate to see how far my country has fallen, I hope the World Cup and Olympics (or individual teams) rethink coming here. It's now a "sh--hole country."

Why do Americans often choose FL over Portugal? Because it’s easier. It’s often cheaper.

If you live in Toronto or Montreal getting to FL is quick and easy. There’s a reason that millions of Canadians have done it for decades.

They are coming for weather, not culture. There are a million places they can go for weathers. Florida can rot.

You realize that decreasing revenue in a major sector of our 3rd most populous state is not a good thing for the US.

You do realize this, right?

After Europe and Canada are forced to pay for their defense and pay reciprocal tariffs they won't have jobs or money to jet set in any numbers. Net gain for USA by an exponential amount.

DP. If DeSantis, the governor of Florida doesn’t care, why should we. DeSantis is diligently trying to deport one to two thirds of the state’s tourism workforce anyway.

LOL, you keep telling yourself that.

In the real world, the other countries and trading zones are creating tariff free or tariff-lite deals that exclude the US. At the end of the day, the US economy is being decimated and the rest of the world is moving on. There is no replacing trade deals for example selling US beef abroad or US cash crops abroad when Brazil and Argentina can fill the void.

So if they can't rip us off then they will have gigantic trade deficits with China and the rest of Asia without reserve currency and their massive welfare states.

Exactly.. Europe is dependent on ripping off and grifting the USA. So their new plan is to rip off China all of Asia, Brazil and Mexico ??

Nobody will be as stupid as the United States before Trump.

Floridian here. Hey, we tried to warn you. We were the horrid MAGA experiment, where “woke went to die.” So many of us screamed from the rooftops, but instead of listening, the US as a whole followed Florida off a cliff and doubled down. The whole US is “Florida” now.

They aren't "ripping us off"

If you go to the grocery and spend $100, then you have a "trade deficit" of $100 to the grocery store. But you have $100 worth of groceries. Trump, for purposes of tariffs, is calling that a trade deficit when it is really US consumer and businesses buying stuff that they need.

They have huge tariffs and trade barriers

Thats why they are freaking out over US charging 30 percent tariffs. We don't need Europe's products one bit ... They need our market and it's huge trade deficit. Trump is an absolute hero for US citizens and workers.

Exactly. He grossly exaggerates the trade deficit numbers and grossly misrepresents what they are. For example, most of our "trade deficit" with Canada comes from us buying cheap oil from them. I can't ever recall feeling outraged, cheated and ripped off when I see cheaper prices at the gas pump. Cheaper prices help customers, and help shipping.
