My kids (who unlike Mandel's are actual MCPS students) are Jewish, culturally, religiously, and halachically. This post is a dog whistle to the worst parts of my community, and I'd vote against Mandel on the basis of this retweet alone.

I find the psychology of people like Mandel fascinating/horrifying. She clearly had an unfortunate childhood (which I wouldn't wish on anyone) so does a 180 to become the most religious-y, mom-y, parent that ever parented.

It's kind of sad, honestly.

She has publicly spoken about her mother's multiple abortions and was kind of shitty about it and said something to the effect of being upset that her mom killed her siblings and how damaging that was to her.

Like...you've also said your mother was a broke alcoholic who raised you in a trailer park. I think she probably saw it as doing what she could to manage. I'm not pro-abortion by any means, but I have empathy for her mother rather than putting her medical decisions on blast.

God imagine going through the painful decision of terminating a pregnancy because it's your best shot at giving your dd who is already born the best life you can and 30 years later she puts you on blast on twitter as having "killed her siblings." Wtf.

I honestly think it's why having kids is her entire identity. She loves to create this false dichotomy of there being women like her - who have as many kids as possible and love being a mother and homeschool and do crafts and cook - and women like mean feminists who have no kids and hate children and kidnap them to feed to goblins. In reality most women have a manageable amount of kids and love them but also need some balance. Very odd. I think it makes her feel superior to other women and is a coping mechanism for dealing with her childhood trauma. It's sad.

Wow. That’s a lot to unpack. I definitely do not want her to be on the board. It’s not appropriate for her to be for many reasons, but I hope one day she is able to receive help to process what scarred her in childhood. It frames us all.

No idea who Bethany is and not clear about her political ideology. But it seems to me that just one person (the op) kept smearing and bullying her. Now I found out she is a conservative Democrat which makes me keen on voting for her.

She is not a conservative democrat? She is a conservative Republican running as a democrat.

This is true, and thoughtful.

The thing I'd add as someone who also experienced childhood instability is that I actually understand the impulse to throw yourself into a community and lifestyle that you think offers you some "protection" in the form of faith-based or community guardrails. It's HARD to be a woman and a mother and a professional. Sometimes it feels like it would be easier if I could just move to Idaho and raise my kids with a bunch of sister wives, and only need to deal with my husband every 7 days when it is my turn.

But that's a fantasy not real life. It would also be a lot worse in practice than in my mind.

Not Jewish but I don’t get it.

PP here. That's why I called it a dog whistle. It's not for you. It's for those who disdain interfaith marriages (the Xmas/Hanukah tree) and who dislike "urban Jews" whose tradition is more cultural than observant (the Seinfeld reference).

It's the Jewish version of Vatican I Catholics. They would rather the world have a few "good" Jews than many Jews who fit under a bigger tent.

That was actually very helpful because I’m catholic actually lol. Thank you.

She's become notorious after her "woke" interview flop went viral. If she makes it past the primary, every unhinged, hyperbolic wanna-be pundit with a podcast—on both the right and the left—is going to seize on MoCo and plaster her, and this race, everywhere.

OP's rant is going to look tame compared to what we'll see from the "far left," and the Moms4Liberty wing will undoubtedly be spewing stuff just as nasty, and exponentially more harmful to a lot of our kids and families.

I don't want my kids' schools, or our county, to be caught in the middle of all this ugliness. I don't want kids and parents with genuine concerns to be seized on as a symbol, or splashed all over the internet as a rallying point. I don't want my kids' schools to be used as a wedge for someone else's issue.

If we're not voting more thoughtfully than simply "anyone else," we're going to become a target for outside groups, just waiting for the opportunity to send in their clowns and create a circus. We can't let either political extreme use MCPS as a pawn in their national games. But Mandel is gleefully leading them all right to our door.

I can't disagree that the status quo is unacceptable, and an overhaul is essential. But we need a new school board that doesn't come with that kind of tradeoff. I know some people love a chaos candidate, but please, not at the expense of our kids.

Thank you for posting this. I have been commenting and watching this as well, but you worded exactly what I have feared an outcome will be if her running. We all want change. We all (parents, students, educators- true stakeholders in this) deserve an effective board that puts the needs of OUR children first. Please vote wisely.

This poster is lying. The poster has posted 12 times, generally in support of Mandel.

It is pretty clear that Mandel trolls are astroturfing this thread.

Oh yes she does.
Her tweets she scrubbed absolutely have her supporting Neo Nazis

But not currently

What do you mean not currently?

Yes she does have you heard her speak recently? I have and dam it she's a NAZI.

Moms 4 Liberty garbage.

She's Jewish, so she's not a Nazi. Her article about befriending Neo-Nazi was purposefully titled as clickbait so Dems would read it and freak out and Bethany could jerk herself off to the fact that people are talking about her.

She did vote for Neo-Nazis. Well, scratch that. In 2016 she was "#NeverTrump," then in 2020 she had a meltdown that could rival that of an autistic toddler about having to wear masks so she became vocally Trump* and then two months later after January 6 she started pretending she hadn't been vocally Trump. Bethany doesn't have any platform other than "attention for Bethany" so yeah. That's her game.

*The constant posts in this thread about "I have never heard of Bethany but I have talked to all my friends and we are Democrats but we are voting for her!" are all in the same tone of Bethany's 2020 tweets about "I am driving around Montgomery county and every house has a Trump sign!!!! I believe he will win Bethesda!" F uckwit.

I'd never heard of her before reading this theread, but I will seriously consider voting for her now simply because she scares the posters, who I find annoying. She's exactly the remedy that MCPS so desperately needs.

Me neither, but she would provide the unconventional thinking needed to save MCPS! What's her stance on faux equity?

It is one thing to post over and over again (this is your 17th post in this thread) without noting that you are a previous poster, but this is the second time that you have directly replied to your own post. The OP might be making liberals look bad, but you are not doing much better for Mandel supporters.

NP, how many times has the OP replied on this thread?

The OP has posted 21 times. BTW, I wrote about this thread here:

Okay wow that’s what I suspected. I agree both sides seem to be sock puppeting, but from my perspective, the OP seems to be over the top while others supporting the candidate are just seeing it from another point of view but in a more sane manner.

It is a question of styles. The OP is like, "Mandel will rip the books from your children's hands you idiots and force them to kiss Nazis, but only Nazis of the opposite sex. Are you a Nazi?" The Mandel trolls are more, "I just heard of Mandel five minutes ago (while posting for the 10th time in favor of Mandel) and she sounds great. Even though I am a progressive Democrat, I'm going to vote for her".

No comment about OP, they are a loon, but re the pro-Mandel trolls - that is a very common conservative style I find. It reminds me of the guy at the beginning of the Trump administration who tweeted “I was in a coffee shop in Brooklyn and a bunch of progressive 20somethings were talking about how they are glad Trump won” or whatever. Megyn Kelly does this a lot too, she will say things like “I have very leftist friends who always supporter gay rights but now they are joining Moms for Liberty because they see how sick the Democratic Party is” or something to that effect. I hate the word “normalize” because it’s so overused by the left but I think it is an attempt at normalizing the current GOP. “See? Sane, rational left of center moderates are voting for Bethany, it’s fine!”

But again OP is pretty weird too and obviously I don’t think Bethany is a Nazi.

Jeff -- I think the whole thread started as a false-flag operation, hyperbolozing sentiment against the candidate just so the sock puppets could do this very thing. The aim is just to keep her name on the front page as much as to push "reasoned" support for the candidate to anyone who takes the click bait.

If locking isn't appropriate, maybe you could retitle the thread, simply eliminating the candidate's name?
