David Trone for senate

Alsobrooks is toast.

Keep in mind that Hogan over performed the polling in both of his gubernatorial victories. Strong indicator that there are a lot of “shy” Hogan voters who don’t want to publicly admit that they’re voting Republican.

Two things:

1. Hogan was running for governor, not senator. Crossing party lines is low risk in gubernatorial elections. That’s why it’s not unusual to see democratic governors in deeply red states.

2. Hogan never ran for office during a presidential election year, when people are very focused on lifetime Supreme Court appointments. And the Senate is inextricably linked with the Supreme Court.

and 3. Hogan was elected before Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.

Yes, if only guys voted, Hogan probably would win. However, it's not only guys that vote.

He's a strong candidate, for sure. The only question is weather he can convince Marylanders that he is NOT a lockstep Republican vote for Supreme Court appointees. If not for this one issue, he would cruise to an easy victory.

Trone has all the money and a decent story (grew up using an outhouse, built a successful company, is not a terrible person despite being rich). Not sure he can win his primary since he does not have a track record of successes on issues that people care about.

The leader in the "roadside sign competition" is the always reliable Robin Ficker. Ten time champion!

If not for this one issue of measly, pesky, minor issue of women having the right to make their own health care and reproductive decisions...

Yeah that’s kind of important. If anyone thinks Hogan will provide Democrats with the 51st vote against one of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominees, they are well and truly living in a fantasyland contained in a dreamworld.

People are free to vote for whomever they want, of course. But they should at least vote with their eyes open: Hogan will caucus with Republicans, which means that Biden’s SC nominees will never even get a vote if Dems end up with 49 senators. It also means that if Hogan is the 50th Republican elected to the senate, Trump’s SC nominees will be confirmed with ease.

What relevance does the Washington Post have for the state of Maryland?

I find their primary endorsements very helpful, actually. For who NOT to vote for. They've been reliable in this way for at least 20 years.

The Post said that either Trone or Alsobrooks are well-qualified and could do the job:

"In their May 14 primary election, Maryland Democrats face a dilemma, but at least it’s the good kind: how to choose between two well-qualified candidates seeking the nomination to run for U.S. senator against the likely Republican contender, former governor Larry Hogan. Similar in policy and ideology, either Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks or Rep. David Trone, who has represented Maryland’s 6th Congressional District since 2019, could do the job"

Since the most important thing is to beat Hogan, I voted for Trone.

I beg to differ. I posted this back on page 5 of of this thread (several months ago), but it bears repeating. Trone is a fair-weather Democrat. He pushes policies that he finds polically expedient. He was very progressive when he was running to represent Montgomery County, but from his history, he's never been reliably liberal. So you take your chances with that one. If it is politically expedient to be like Joe Manchin, you better believe that Trone will go that way. If he thinks he can get a better deal from the other side, then he'll go that way. He's a self-made man, but he made himself by doing what was best for himself and not for others. Don't expect him to be altruistically liberal because he'll only stick that way as long as there's something in it for himself.

Because of his history prior to starting politics. Before he got into politics, he spend beaucoup bucks lobbying to create special waivers for businesses to violate state law in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Delaware. There are laws that govern pricing for alcohol, largely to prevent big companies from preying on poor residents. Trone spent millions of dollars trying to create special waivers so that he could do exactly that, prey on the poor residents, some of whom had alcohol problems, but he was willing to bilk them for more than they could afford. He also violated state law in Pennsylvania. Had the ATF not broken the law and had cases against him thrown out of court, he would likely have been found guilty and served prison time. Instead, the cases were thrown out and Trone's withdrew his business from Pennsylvania to avoid clashing with the law again. He's also had legal issues in Massachusetts. So, he does what is good for himself and does not stand up for the middle and lower classes.

Prior to joining politics, he often hosted fund raisers and charity events for pro-business Republican candidates. These are candidates who had terrible policies towards the middle and lower classes. His business interests were more important than the interests of the poor and working classes. His candidates were often against social services, wanted to decrease social safety nets and eliminate progmams like unemployment insurance.

He has only flipped to supporting liberal policies because that's what gets him elected in Montgomery County. But he doesn't have strong liberal tendancies himself. He champions causes that make him look good rather than causes he truly believes in or supports. He's a fair-weather liberal and if his political fortunes will be better supported by different policies he'll go with those. He's a DINO and we need someone who truly looks out for Marylanders rather than his own financial or political gain.

+1. Manchin has to thread the needle because he's from a state that is 70% republican. Trone won't have that issue. If there were any issues with Trone's voting record in Congress, we'd have heard about it by now.

+1 and it’s not just the votes. If Hogan is the 50th Senator with Trump as President or the 51st Senator with Biden as President, then the Republicans will have the Senate majority and all sorts of other bad things will happen.

You're kidding right?

Two things people in the state of Maryland care about: Ravens and Orioles. Go try to find coverage in the Post.

You probably think the state of Maryland only exists as an extension of DC. Which is why you’re having a hard time understanding why Hogan is hoping Alsobrooks wins the primary.

Three more things people in the state of Maryland care about: Commanders, Nationals, Capitals.

Oh, I would never say he was loyal to traditional Democratic party ideals nor that he is a liberal. Simply that he is not a terrible person, which is how I would describe too many of America's wealth class.
Trone does not seem to be a bad guy.
