Radford is actually the best for her as a state school and probably Shenandoah a very close second.

No, she isn’t a top student. I guess I don’t belong here, according to most, right?

Yes you do.

Best wishes to your daughter. Hopes she finds the best fit - for her.

Thank you. We are currently in another state getting ready to look at a school today. I have worked very hard to put together a list of target schools that fit her criteria and she hopefully has a shot of getting into. Hoping that seeing the schools will motivate her to do a little better in school this year.

I don't know about jerks but my kid nephew chose VT instead of UVA for engineering and I know 4 of his other friends that did the same. UVA has a lot of catching up to do in hard sciences.

\
Actually, 1) it doesn't - you are behind the times. Go see what Jim Ryan has been doing; and 2) that's why Virginia Tech exists. California and Michigan don't have a Virginia Tech

VT better than UVA in hard sciences is certainly true for grad school. In my field of mechanical engineering/engineering mechanics, it's easier to get into UVA than VT and we have had a lot of students that have UVA as second choice.

Physics? Chemistry? Neuroscience? I don't buy into blanket statements.

As a scientist looking at the UVA faculty vs VT faculty I would say UVA wins hands down in all the science areas I know. Engineering is the only area I would say there are folks who might go to VT over UVA, just because of the breadth of options and classes.

DP. This has got to be a troll post. Surely you don’t think people are taking you seriously? “Might” go to VT over UVA? VT is the top choice for many students, for a multitude of reasons.

I have no idea whether there is any validity to Parchment data. What would be interesting to me if real data would be UVA Engineering vs. VT Engineering. I think there is more overlap there.

Of course there is. I’d venture a guess that most of the people that chose Tech are engineering focused kids.

Ps I have zero connection - didn’t apply there myself (I attended a different ACC school) and my child isn’t going to even look

( not the PP) but when people on this board day that UVA is first at graduating jerks (over W&M), clearly you’re gonna get a reaction no? My kids attend (I didn’t) and they are absolutely not jerks, neither are their friends.

You might want to look at what the poster was responding to. UVA boosters are always starting nonsense.

No, they are not. there is a distinct pattern on this board. Someone says something nasty about UVA and those who understand college admissions correct them. It's that simple. There is a lot of envy in the DCUM area because the entering class at UVA is so small compared to other state flagships and because it has gotten so difficult to get in. Many Virginian families cannot afford the difference in tuition between $35k (all in) and $80K at the privates. Bear in mind that the difference is often paid in after tax dollars, so you aren't talking about just $45K difference per year (we had to refinance our home to send our kids to college; fortunately we could do it). So many Virginians really want to get their children into UVA, W&M, Virginia Tech and the others. We have a superb system. But the availability of slots is not like Texas, California or Michigan. Hence the bitterness that sometimes pops up on this board. Also, Virginia Tech is a rival as is UMD so those students often come on here and make "jerk" comments.

Those parents that are fortunate enough to get their kids into these schools bank the difference if they have it. We did, so have $200K+ to pay now for grad school overseas then law school. That's why you see such bitterness here .... because a lot of money is at stake.

DP. I agree with you to some extent, but the bolded is ridiculous. I have seen just as many "jerk comments" from UVA boosters/parents/students about those rival schools - anything to put down a school that isn't UVA.

It's clear to me that anyone trashing another school - unless there is obvious reason to (like Oberlin, for instance) - is simply bitter that they or their kids didn't get accepted.

DP. No, the students from rival schools do frequent here and college confidential and reddit. They are the ones who write the insipid comments like "jerks".

This is absolutely true. Been on this board for hmm 3 years now? No real UVA booster would actually call other kids in other schools “jerks”. That said, ALOT of people, including teens, DO come into this board just for the sole purpose of rabble rousing and starting these UVA vs… fights. The fact that some people actually decide not to apply there because if that is just a shame and ill informed. There are people who continually come on here to say that UVA is not diverse and all northern VA “high school 2.0”, and that just doesn’t describe the school today at all. I have two kids there. The detractors that say these things, don’t.

I think UVA boosters do tend to put other schools down on this board. That doesn't condone those who put UVA down.

Oh, they absolutely do and it’s laughable that anyone would suggest UVA boosters somehow are innocent of this behavior
. I immediately check out of threads in which the UVA-boosterism is over the top. And there are plenty of threads which helpfully suggest other VA state schools, only to be sneered at by a UVA booster as “less-than.” Not a good look.

It's not "laughable" (what a silly phrase - you can do better). The fact is that UVA parents/students/ boosters/whatever NEVER start a thread saying "woo hoo my kid got into UVA" and then hold court about how amazing their kid or the campus is. Ever. That's now how it's ever worked here. Whether you believe it or not, someone from VT or UMD or someone who didn't get in or is envious of someone who did takes a swipe, like saying all 27,000 students there are rich, elitist arrogant jerks and of course those who ACTUALLY have some affiliation with the university or might ACTUALLy know something respond politely and attack a link to prove that the hysteric is wrong. Happens over and over and over. I, for one, have NEVER once started a threat on UVA on this forum. Ever. But I will correct when I see libelous comments.

Oh my. The more you post the same nonsense, the more absurd - and LAUGHABLE - you look. I've bolded the most ridiculous parts of your post. Just stop. The fact that you're *still* insisting no one from UVA ever starts - or participates in - rude, obnoxious threads trashing other schools makes it clear you are not a serious person. Anyone who's been here for any length of time (I've been on DCUM for 15 years) knows what you're saying repeatedly is simply false. You are the hysteric you're accusing others of being. Just correcting you and your libelous comments.

DP- you are way too invested in this nonsense of trying to call out UVA people, what is your issue? Are you so impacted by this that you continue to post nonsensical gibberish...and 15 years on DCUM perusing the college forum? Either you started when your kids 2 (pathetic) or you continue to come here to stir the pot (also pathetic). Get over yourself, if this was a group of people in person and not anonymous you would be rightfully laughed out of the room.

Too funny. You assume my oldest child is 18. And the only person I'm calling out is the PP (probably you), for falsely insisting that UVA people *never!* trash other schools. As for "nonsensical gibberish" - do better. I can hardly read your bizarre word salad.

I’m not reading all of this. I don’t think many understand how schools are ranked. It’s peer review. So no peer is going to be like UVA sucks. UVA is already top.

It’s research driven. What research came out of this university? Schools are constantly trying to figure out how to up the ranks. But what you don’t get is that it’s driven by the PHDs and research. That is what drives the rankings. And your undergraduate kid won’t even see it. Perhaps they’ll be lost in some mega class of 200 so you can brag, Larla went to xyz. Larla may actually get a better education from a lesser school.

VA has lots of great school options.

True. But “UVA is top” is an entirely subjective opinion on your part. Many of us don’t agree.
