It’s pretty standard across the country or becoming so.

Thia happened about 5 years ago. Board and Admin sympathetic, but transportation problematic for getting Older siblings home to watch the ES kids.

Why is it the older students responsibility to watch elementary kids? I don’t have both, why don’t have an elementary kid, why do my children have to bend for that? Where are the parents?

It's been that way as long as I can remember. We like it and don't understand why everybody doesn't do it this way.

I’m impressed with Loudon County. And somehow they still manage to have high school sports. Imagine that!

LCPS parent here. Some teams will practice in the morning, before school, especially if it's warm.

We all get 24 hours in a day, just have to use them wisely.

So the kids still have to get up early the

No, they choose to, simpleton.

The only reason later start times is DOA is because MCPS and the BOE fail to put the needs of students first. If Dr. McKnight was serious about her slogan for the school year then she would support the idea.

Admittedly I didn’t read through 15 pages of comments, but as an elementary school parent the 9:20 start time is insane. What parent can do that drop off and be at work at a reasonable time, and it also means at least 2 hours between wake up and school start time for my kids. Crazy.

Yes they fail to put the needs of some students ahead of other students to address the whims of a some parents who fail to grasp your actions affect others

You use before care.

Yes…but that is a paid service that not everyone can afford. People who can’t get back to pick up by 4 already have to pay for after care, which means paying for both. DC schools start a full hour earlier- only have to pay for aftercare.

Besides the bountiful research showing that it is better for teens to start school later, it makes no sense for the younger kids to wait so late to start.

ES can easily start at 8 am and parents can utilize after-care.
MCPS can buy more buses. It is wealthy county and can afford it.

So dismiss the older kids needs.

I know! Why can't their nanny take care of it! What's wrong with these people!

You know what older kids can also start earlier too! Just like now! I've read this research that indicates that younger kids also need sleep.

This. Wealthy parents can't get their kids to bed at a reasonable time and claim early starts harm their children. They fail to realize that not everyone is in the same situation. Find a new hobby please, this one has been discussed and decided.

It's the government's responsibility. I shouldn't have to parent!
