Baby is going to be on dad's insurance policy. When do we need to alert the insurance company that a baby is coming? |
It's usually within 30 days of the birth, but you should really check the requirements of your specific insurance company. |
Put the baby on the policy as soon as you can - I had the form filled out as much as possible and we faxed it to our insur. company before any of us were discharged.
You just never know what entails you to have to stay or go back to the hospital (we had to return to the hospital for phototherapy for jaundice) and it is SO much easier to complete paperwork for your baby if he/she is already in the "system". You don't need to have a SSN for the baby when you add him/her to the policy. The insur. companies know that it may take some time for that part to be processed. |
I think that 30 days after the birth is pretty standard. That's what it was for my son, and I called about the baby on the way and it's the same. |
OP here. So it sounds like we don't need to contact them before the birth, but it would be good to do it immediately after.... if that's not right, let me know! |
Actually, you may want to contact them to make sure the hospital where you'll be delivering is "covered" by them. Plus, with our BCBS insur. we had to call before any overnight hospital stay (unless it was an emergency). Just FYI. |
Also good idea so all your "ducks are lined up" when you take your newborn to the pediatrician's office a few days after discharge. Your insur. company shouldn't have any problems retro-activating your newborn, but sometimes it makes it less complicated. |
