Untreatable bladder infection/UTI

Anonymous
I am 26 weeks pregnant and had this problem since I was 19 weeks. Everytime I have a urine culture test, I am being told that I have bladder infection/UTI. I have taken so many antibiotics already and scared that too much antibiotic could affect my baby? Any idea? What will be the worst problem if in case if this won't get treated? I am very worried now.

I'm pretty sure that if you don't get it treated it will spread to your kidneys. That is so much more dangerous than taking lots of antibiotics during your pregnancy. The strain of your pregnancy + a serious kidney infection could mean disastrous results for both of you. I would talk with your doctor about an appropriate course of action. Explain your fears to him/her and they will be able to inform on the safest method. In the meantime, drink lots of cranberry juice (or take pills) and drink lots and LOTS of water to flush out the infection. I know that will be hard being pregnant and all, but I'm sure you'd rather run to the bathroom every 5 minutes than have serious complications due to a rampant infection. Good luck!

Have they tried Macrobid?

Op here, can you give me a specific brand of cranberry pills and where to buy it? I went to Traders Joe one time and was told that they do not have it. Last week, I went to GNC and was told to check at CVS as I am pregnant. The lady told me that it might not be safe due to my condition. Thanks!

Have you tried eliminating sugar from your diet or making any other changes?

I don't even know how you are running around to docs and drugstores with a UTI. Every time I get them I'm miserable, in bed crying and begging my husband to put me out of my misery. I know they say that you can have them and have no symptoms - shoot - consider yourself lucky.

There's also a home remedy type of thing but again - all of these are hit or miss with pregnant women. Most people say to refrain from all this because they don't know otherwise.

In any case - if you aren't in a huge hurry, order online:

OP, I had a UTI for pretty much my entire PG with my DS. I was on macobid for 8 months straight. I also took cranberry extract pills. Are you on meds for the duration or just 10 days then off, then tested again a week later etc??? I would talk to your OB.

It is suitable for longer term use as a preventative measure.

Also, if doing the cranberry juice thing, go for unsweetened.

You can get cranberry pills at whole foods. Also your dr should test the type of bacteria causing the infection which will tell them which antibiotics will work. Not all antibiotics work on all bacteria. Ask if they have done this and if not ask that they do it. I've had a kidney infection and the pain is unbelievable. Treatment is IV antibiotics do you aren't going to get around taking them you just need the right ones.

I'm the PP who was on macrobid for 8 months. Before putting me on it, my urine was tested to make sure it was the right drug to treat the bacteria they found. It, along with the cranberry extract pills and a few glasses of cranberry juice (unsweetened) daily, really helped.

Also keep well hydrated. Drink a lot of water.

cranberry pills.
unsweetened cranberry juice (whole foods or cheaper at TJs)
by the time noon hits, you should be 60% or so into your daily water intake.
