Baby Swing recommendations????

Anonymous
We have a 5 week old baby and our baby swing from DD is apparently breaking as it is now making a loud cranking sound that echoes through the house. The baby is not sleeping too much but does sleep in the swing so we want to get a new one. Any suggestions of a swing you love that doesn't have a loud motor sound? We'd prefer a "wooshing" sound instead.

Before we buy a new one, I'd love to hear some recs?

I was amazed and appalled at how many swings require D-cell batteries. Given how quickly they need to be replaced, it's not only expensive, it's terrible to be throwing all those used batteries in the trash!

So my only recommendation is get one that plugs in to the wall. We have a "power plus" swing, (don't remember the brand) that can operate on batteries or plugged in. It's relatively quiet.

I loved, loved, loved the Fisher Price Nature's Touch Baby Papasan Swing. I got it about 15 months ago so I think they have a few newer versions. The one I have has the little birds and butterflies that float above the baby's head. I saw one yesterday that has little sheep now. The seat is so cushy and comfortable and it rocks from side to side and back and forth. I agree with a PP that it does go through batteries if you're using it alot but once we got past the first month or 2 (which you're already close to passing) and he was in it less often, the batteries lasted months.

We loved this one, too! And my friend swears by the Fisher Price Soothing Motions Glider.

Another vote for the Papasan swing. Though, we also eventually bought the "travel" Fisher Price Aquarium (I think they are on to some other theme now, but same idea) one that is down close to the floor for the second floor of our house and that was nice too. Also, I really liked the compactness of it versus the mongo one downstairs that takes up so much room.

Don't know a good one, but I do know one to avoid. We were given the Eddie Bauer swing as a gift two years ago with our first child and it's awful. Too fast. Too upright, so the baby tends to fall forward. Terrible, terrible music. We're getting ready to Craig's List it because it hasn't been much of a hit with our second child either. We will say upfront in our posting how much we hate it too!

We have the Papasan swing too and DD is 5.5 months old. She really likes the swing and the nice option is that you can rotate the swing to go either side to side or back and forth. Now that she's older we have to go back and forth and she was starting to lean too much to the side as if she was going to fall out; must be a phase though. The other nice option is that it has different melodies and you can also turn the music off (it can wear on you after a while).

I agree about the batteries being expensive and needing D batteries. If you're really going through them a lot you may want to consider rechargable batteries (I would recommend either having a second set as you wouldn't want to be without). We buy our batteries at Costco which helps with the cost some. I'm amazed at how many toys that need AA batteries. Holy cow!!! We always have a stock of batteries on hand and a phillips head screwdriver in the kitchen drawer.

Best of luck!

We have the Fisher Price rainforest one. It plugs into the wall (no batteries needed) and there are 4 different modes of music - relaxing rainforest sounds, lullaby, tropical beat, and whooshing.

Oh, the swing can go left-right OR front to back so that was a great option.

The only thing we don't like about it is that it takes up a lot of space because the stand/base is wide.

Not sure how much it cost b/c we received it as a gift.
DD didn't like as a newborn, but loved it around the 3 month mark.

I second the Fisher Price Rainforest swing.

love the papasan swing. i have a graco travel swing from the first and someone gave me an ancient full-sized graco hand-me-down but my baby loved the papasan at someone else's house so much (slept for three hours during a party!) that i bought one used on craigslist. awesome. it is on clearance now at walmart i believe if you prefer new. also if the only problem with the swing is the creaking try calling customer service - i did for the creaking and b/c the swing was turning off after 30 min - and they sent me a new motor for it - so now i basically have a new swing. hurray!

We have a hand-me-down Fisher Price swing (Nature's Touch cradle swing) that makes a clicking noise as it swings. It isn't a loud creaking but before we consider buying a new one, is this something they do even new?

We have the papsan style swing with the wide set legs. We found that ours would make a clicking sound if the legs got pushed too close together and when we would make sure they were steady and spread out as far as they could go the clicking would go away. We absolutely LOVE this swing and so did my son. We are hoping Baby #2 will love it as much.

I too cannot recommend one but can recommend one to avoid. Do not get the Graco Silhouette. It is a piece of S&#! While my son loves it and the music, it is breaking already, plus it makes a loud clicking noise which prevents me from napping when DS is napping.
