Are 10-month olds capable of throwing tantrums?

I think mine is - she has thrown little fits on more than one occassion when she did not get exactly what she wanted. Is it normal for this behavior to start so early?!?

Yep, that's when my son started throwing little tantrums. Just think of her as "advanced". =)

Good luck

I think they are at the age where they are learning that you respond to them, they have discovered their voice and don't have any inhibitions about using it. Honestly, I don't think they are throwing a tantrum, mearly expressing their needs but don't have the words yet.

I think my 10 month threw little tantrums and at 12 months still does in the same way. If he doesn't get what he wants (and he is on the floor), he throws himself back so he is laying on the ground and screams while banging his legs and feet on the floor. Walking away stops them pretty quickly.

I would say no. A tantrum suggests a cognitive choice to misbehave, and a 10 month old does not possess this ability, the neurology is simply not there yet.

I have a 2+ year old that began throwing tantrums full force at about 10 months. I was surprised and thought it was something else b/c he was so young but I soon realized exactly what it was. He lay down on the floor and arched his back and stamped his feet and the whole bit. Still does it now by the way so its a long stage for some of them. Good luck!

Yes. My son did it for the first time at 9 months. Started crying, arching his back while I was holding him, and threw himself onto the floor when I put him down. If DH and I ignored him he would stop but would wait for us to look at him to start up again.

I have never thought of a tantrum in this way... I always thought a tantrum was something that happened out of frustration when a toddler/young child didn't get something they wanted or an outcome they desired. This sounds like a clinical definition... would the poster mind sharing the source of the information???? Not trying to be critical... just curious.

And from what I previously thought of tantrums... I would say, yes, a 10 month old can throw them.

YES! It doesn't need to necessarily get worse though. We tend to ignore our 2 y.o.'s tantrums and they end pretty quickly (he started around 10 months). I think it also depends on the kid's temperment.
