Switching a job after a year

Would you switch your job after a year if things weren't working out? I was hired to lead a project at my workplace. I've been on the job for five months and everything that I have been promised is not working out. The project will be delayed and who knows if it will happen. The staff is disorganized, the payroll keeps messing up my productivity numbers. I need to keep track of everything I do and reconcile at the end of each month.

I cannot go into much detail without disclosing private info, but I'm really thinking of switching my job to another that I have declined last year. I really wish it would work out, but I'm not sure how much longer I can put up with without losing the other opportunity.

Has anyone switched jobs after a year? Were you happy with your decision? Was the grass greener on the other side?

Yes, in my 25 year career I've switched jobs after one year in two situations. Both were miserable and I looked until I found a better fit.

PP here. I was much happier and stayed at the second jobs for 5 plus years.

I've also had two situations where the company was a bad fit. In both situations, I just knew something was wrong on my first day on the job. With each, I stuck it out for a year and then left. My only regret is not leaving sooner.

A year is plenty long enough, especially if you have another opportunity.

depends on your industry. If you are some random skill set without many options than no, if you are for say in IT Security than go ahead. Remember that it can be a ding if you are a job hopper.

I'm a recruiter and I'm sorry that you are stuck in this situation. You've put in a year. That's plenty. Unless you have a history of job hopping, most employers will understand the situation you are in, especially if payroll is not on time. Not sure what industry you are in, but if you are in IT you should not have a problem finding another position in the DC area. We have more open positions here in the DC that we have candidates. Good Luck to you.

With IT, many of the people jump all around every 1-2 years. Not a big deal but it depends on the industry like others have said. No harm in looking to see what your options are.

OP, so sorry you are in this situation. I was as well and I changed jobs after 8 months. When interviewing I very plainly explained that my current position wasn't a good match for my skills and potential employers seemed satisfied with my response.
GL! It sucks to be stuck in a miserable job where you have been mislead.

I've done it a couple of times over the last 20 years. It doesn't look too bad in future interviews unless you do it several times in a row. Sometimes a job just isn't the right fit, and most interviewers should get that. Good luck!

It doesn't look bad. My most successful friends have done it before. It's not bad unless you make a habit of it.

I sure would. I have done it once in my 30+ year career and it was not considered a problem.
