What about the mailman and the garbage guys?

My mailman rocks! And the garbage guys are very good about taking stuff.

What do you give them? Gift cards? Food? Booze?

I work so I'm not sure how to give them anything. Leave it out by the can...someone else might take it.

What do you do?

We tip the people who pick up our trash - cash in an envelope taped inside the lid of the can.

they can accept gifts - I believe they can't accept money directly. We gave gift cards last year and they were appreciated. I never thought of the garbage men though - great idea OP. Is $20 for each enough, in two envelopes?

We give our mailman a $20 gift card to Starbucks. We don't tip our trash guys (even though they're awesome) because they're not allowed to accept gifts and I got caught trying to give them one last year. I'd hate for them to get in trouble because of me.

We give our mailman a tin of salted caramels.

We left out tins of cookies for all our garbage men/recycling guys. One tin per person.

I felt weird leaving out cash, so went with the tins instead. Who doesn't like cookies? I've read you can leave beer out for the trash people too, but I'm not super comfortable with that either.

Our usual guys are almost always off the week before Christmas, so any gift would go to their substitute.

Meet them at the curb with some cookies. No one will get fired for that.

Postal employees are not allowed to accept gifts worth more than $20, and are not allowed to receive any "cash equivilents" including gift cards. Lots of postal employees take them, but they are prohibited from doing so by regulation.

We don't give either anything. If every household left $10 in the mailbox as a gift, the carrier would go home with way over $2000 for the day!

Good for them. I'm sure the majority of the people are like yourself. So I'd be surprised if they went home with $100.

Mailman got a $25 gift card and cookies. Garbage men got $50--they leave self addressed envelopes.
