Price of custom vs. Semi custom cabinets

I got a quote for kraftmaid cabinets that are not that much less then a custom order for the same basic setup. Is this possible? Should I be concerned about the quality of the customs? I've never remodeled a kitchen but was under the impression that custom can be prohibitively expensive.
