What DO we like about our schools?

I wonder if it's possible to have a thread where everyone says what they do like about their child's public or public charter school. Seriously. No double-edged compliments or anything. Just what we like.

Principal, facilities, that it's a half-block from my house, that parents are super-engaged, and that it's free.

This, plus the teachers and we are a half mile away.

I like the extreme dedication I see at our charter. Everyone works hard, wears many hats, and pulls together.

Last night's learning showcase at ITDS was such a great way to pull a community together around student learning. What they are doing at that school to make learning enjoyable, relevant, and effective is remarkable!

All of these plus the sense of community!

Families who have become friends as well as neighbors. Front office staff who are always helpful, kind, and highly attentive to kids. Not just squeeky wheel adults. Custodians who look out for your children's safety as well as keeping things spotless. Well stocked library thanks to generosity of many people. That parent who willingly reads to ALL the kids at dropoff even when they're pulling his fancy tie or when you can hear his blackberry ringing off the hook in his Tumi briefcase. The crossing guard who runs interference with DDOT so none of us get tickets. Room Parents who deal with annoying stuff like supplies and fundraising with efficiency and a sense of humor. Art teacher who doesn't dumb down content. That mom who gets the best pictures of every kid (not just hers). A chancellor who really raised our school's profile this year, giving credit where it's due. (Im purposefully blocking out the negatives for a few minutes.)

Knowledgeable, creative, dedicated, dare I say "inspired" teachers and staff.

What I like about Eastern, McKinley, Woodson and Ballou that they're not Friendship.

I love that IT has super engaging teachers and very active parents. I love the diversity. I love that my kid has been asking me if it's time to go to school three times a day the entire winter break...actually that part is getting irritating but I love his excitement for the school.

My kids go to Brent. The teachers are very caring and dedicated and energetic. Also, we have a strong front office staff.
