Preg. Magazine for New Mom To Be

Anonymous
One of my dear friends just found out she is pregnant. I am so happy for her and wanted to get her a little something to start off her pregnancy. Since she is a first time mom to be, so I thought a subscription to one of the pregnancy magazines would be a good idea. Since I'm not pregnant (unfortunately) I am not really familiar with the different ones out there/most helpful, etc.

Any thoughts on Fit Pregnancy, Pregnancy and Newborn, Pregnancy, any others?

I could just skip the magazine subscription if anyone else has a better gift idea. She works in a spa so I am not sure a "day at the spa" would be a good idea (I thought of that already).

I would skip the subscription- I bought a few with first pregnancy- and- wow- I could have bought quite a few really good pregnancy books! no matter what- all of this info ins on the internet and i got weekly pregnancy newsletters from various places.. That is sweet but a waste of $ give online resources.. I don't know if your friend will realize this yet so no matter what she'll appreciate anything so you can't go wrong! if you go for the massage- make sure place has a pregnancy "doughnut pillow" so she can lay belly downa nd get a back massage- if they don't ahve it- skip it- also at costco you can get spa finder certificates for $100 but pay $75- good luck!

I highly recommend Anne Lamott's book, Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year , but only if your friend is okay with strongly voiced opinions! It's a great read and very very funny.

You are very sweet to think of your friend. I would skip the subscription though. I looked at some of these magazines at the beginning of my pregnancy. I was really hoping for good exercise and eating tips from Fit Pregnancy. Years ago, it had all sorts of exercises with pictures of proper postitions. However, all of them now are just basically big ads for baby products -- even the "articles" are just highlights of the latest baby products. I was very dissapointed.

Perhaps a cute book or pregnancy calendar?

Thanks for the feedback PPs.

A pregnancy calendar is a good idea. She'll love being able to track the development and progress. Do you think a bookstore would carry them?

Have you heard of Mothering magazine? It's my all-time favorite, and definitely worth it. It's a little less-known than some of the other big name magazines -- I personally would love a subscription to it as a pregnancy gift. Just a thought.

She might like a copy of the book "Baby Bargains." It has reviews of all the various baby stuff you can buy. My husband and I thought it was great.

I guess I'm an oddball - I like flipping through pregnancy magazines but I rarely buy them because they are so expensive. I also recommend the baby bargain's book.
