4 yo boy humping bed - is this normal?!

Anonymous
So, recently, we've found our 4 yo boy with is pants down in bed basically humping the bed. Is this normal? He's our first so I have no idea. I haven't made a big deal about it, yet, but he's clearly embarrassed b/c he hides under his covers if I go in to ask what he's doing b/c I hear thumping coming from his room. He even closed the door tonight which he NEVER does before he falls asleep. Any thoughts?!

He's the right age for it. My boys both had their hands down their pants constantly at that age. It's normal and It will pass.

Just the bed? My best friend's oldest around that age preferred humping hard items (such as his dresser and the bathroom floor). It was funny to be downstairs during his "rest-time" (when his baby brother was napping) and to hear the dresser consistently bumping against the wall.

As long as he's doing it in "private" should be fine. Yes it's normal, boys around then are realizing it feels good, but once he's done it for a while it'll become old news and he will move on to something else. Yes he'll still do it of course, but not quite as often (until he reaches his teens, but that's another thread completely).

Girls do it, too.

11:43 - Is it normal that he does it more than once per day? He did it for over a half hour in his bed today, but started while his 2 yo bro and I were in the room. He just pulled his pants down and got in his bed and started rubbing back and forth. Then 2 yo proceeded to take his diaper off! I whisked him out and told 4 yo that it was fine that he did it, but had to do it in private and not when we're in the room. He stayed in there, with the door closed for about 35 min. He NEVER likes to be in his room with the door closed...
