vacation planning while TTC

How do you work around this? I'm afraid to plan a big vacation (cruise, beach house rental with friends, Hawaii, Mexico, etc.) knowing that I might be pregnant when we go, but no idea how pregnant. I was so nauseated with our first during the first trimester that I'd hate to spend the money to just be miserable someplace else. I'm thinking as soon as I find out I'm pregnant, book something for when I'm around 20 weeks, but who knows when/if this pregnancy is even going to happen!

We haven't had a nice vacation since before my 3 year old, and we're really starting to need one. I love visiting my parents, but I need something more...

Oh, and we live in the middle of the country now, so no short notice trips to the shore for us. I love the mountains, but it's been 3+ years since I've seen the ocean. . .and I want fruity drinks brought to me, with or without alcohol!

You cannot live your life around TTC or early pregnancy. You need to live your life. It took DH and I 3 years to get pregnant with our first including one year of IVF -- we would have been pretty miserable if we had put our life on hold during that period of time. We are now lucky enought to be pregnant with #3. The only big concession vacation-wise that we made was not to book a cruise while TTC since they typically don't accept women late in their pregancy or very young babies. Twice we had to cancel short get aways as they interferred with IVF monitoring. One was a trip by car and one was a trip by airplane. We cancelled the airplane tickets and just used them for a flight later in the year on the same airline. Go ahead and plan the vacation that you want. If it is very pricey though, you may want to buy travel insurance that covers illness. I had severe nausea with #2, but the doctor gave me Zofran which at least made life liveable. Luckily, I only had a short period of morning sickness with this pregnancy -- so you never know.

FYI -- last summer we did book a beach house vacation for early this summer. Then I got pregnant and had an expected due date of 1 week after our house rental. We decided to play things by ear and as it turns out I had a miscarriage. I was very glad we did not cancel the rental prematurely as it turned out to be a wonderful getaway during my current pregnancy.

I agree with PP, you can't base your life on when you might be preggo- it took us 3 years and 4 miscarriages so- we at one point stopped saying "when and if we have a child" and just did things.. like buying a larger car, going on vacation.. if you're pregnant- every pregnancy is different- you don't know if you'll be sick or feeling super hungry or whatever- just plan a vacation and have fun- and good luck!

15:27 Poster -- just want to correct my grammar -- yes, I know I should have written "DH and me" -- it is just pretty hard to get things down correctly when you have 2 little ones running around and asking you questions. I know there are numerous other errors, but I'm too tired to correct them all!

Best of luck to the OP!

Have you thought about getting vacation insurance? I know travel agencies (and even some credit card companies) offer that - not sure if it covers you for medical reasons/ pregnancy/infant - you'll have to read the fine print and see, but it may be something to consider if it gives you a peace of mind.

...just a thought.

i agree - do want you want. i've had literally three friends go to France pregnant b/c the trip was planned and then they conceived (Hmmmm, note to self, maybe we should try planning a trip to France and then I will finally get pregnant again!!!). I ended up getting pregnant the third time (after two miscarriages) right before our trip to Hawaii.... yes, it made the trip a bit different than we had planned - esp since who knew if the pregnancy would hold (it was about mid-late first trimester) but so glad we had that trip -- it was the last real vacation we have taken in years since DS arrived later that year!!
