Can you place your child in another school if they are being cared for by relatives?

Am I able to place my child in an elementary school in FCPS that is close to his grandmother's house instead to the one near our home if his grandmother takes care of him everyday after school? She lives within walking distance of the local elementary school and my child can walk to her house. If he goes to school at the one close to our house, somehow we have to figure out how to get him to grandmothers and we both work full time and grandmother does not drive. I am wondering what I can do?

The grandmother needs to have custody and be the legal guardian.

I think you can request this for caregiver issues, but it is likely to be denied depending on the enrollment level at your school of choice. There is an entire page on the fcps website regarding this topic.

For elementary school only, you can request a pupil placement based on child care needs. It has to be approved every year and the school you want to go to must be open to accepting out-of-boundary kids. It can be done, but it's never a sure thing year to year.

Look up pupil placement.

There was a child in my neighborhood doing this a few years ago (she was riding the bus home to grandparents' house after school, and the parents did not live in our school boundary so the only reason she went to our school was because of where the grandparents lived). Not sure how they got it approved by FCPS.
