Got pregnant on birth control!!! Help. I am freaking out.

I am freaking out. I got pregnant and didn't know it because I was on birth control pills and I took it religiously. So now my OB tells me that I am six weeks along when I wasn't expecting to be pregnant in the first place.. I did all the wrong stuff. I went to a spa and sat in a sauna for 15 minutes. I didn't take any prenatal vitamins. I am afraid that the birth control (ortho tricyclen) messed up my baby. Please tell me that other people have had healthy babies when they got pregnant while on birth control. Thank you.

Plenty of people who aren't on birth control don't know they are pregnant until they are six weeks along (or much, much later). Your baby will be fine! Congrats!

my doctor said that in the very early part - the stuff they recommend against - drinking, sauna etc can lead to miscarriage. This is clearly not the case for you . It's these next weeks that are impt in terms of development etc. so you should be fine. Anyway, i am sure your doc can give you more detail but i wouldn't worry

I also got pregnant on Ortho Tricyclen and the result is a beautiful, healthy and smart now 16 month old. I didn't go to a sauna or anything but drank plenty before I knew (found out about 6 wks). My doctor told me at the time that nothing passes between the mother and embryo until 6 weeks, which helped me feel a little better. I know it's still nerve wracking, though. Best of luck!

No worries ... I found out I was 13 weeks pregnant when I went to see my GP. I had been smoking, drinking and living the good life and I have a beautiful and healthy baby!

My next door neighbor didn't find out she was pregnant until 12 weeks and she has an adorable, smart, healthy child. I also have a friend that was on Ortho, as well. She, like you, totally freaked out and I can honestly say that her child is the most adorable of all of my friends and he is healthy, well adjusted, and smart. My friend that got pregnant on Ortho was stressed until the end of the pregnancy - they weren't ready for a child. All of that changed the minute the little one was born - she is a terrific mom. Congratulations! Try not to stress out and enjoy it (easier said than done - I realize).

i'd say this fetus really wanted to be born and he's a fighter. A friend's friend went hiking in the heat of Mexico, had several alcoholic drinks and other activities one wouldn't do when pregnant, BEFORE, she found out she was pregnant. Her daughter is fine.

To OP - congrats and I'm sending well wishes your way. The only other suggestion I have is maybe ask you OB to do a sono soon. I just had one at 6.5 weeks and saw the heartbeat. I also had a sono at the same time with my 2.5 yo DD. It made me feel so much better because once you see a heartbeat the chances of m/c are very small (like 3% I think).

Not to hijack the post - but it seems that most of those that got pg while on the pill were on ortho-tricyclen. Makes me a little worried and might ask OB for alternative BC after this baby is born. Are there alternative BC's that are more effective than the pill?

I also got pregnant while on BC pills (can't remember which brand, but not Ortho). I found out at 5.5 weeks, and also totally freaked out. Husband and I wanted a family, but it was about a year earlier than we had planned. I also had been at a bachelorette party in New Orleans 2 weeks before that - drinking, eating sushi and other "no-nos," partying till all hours, going in the hot tub at the hotel, etc... (interestingly enough, what I thought was just a yukky stomach from drinking wine and cocktails in the same night at that bachelorette party, was actually the beginnings of morning sickness!!!)

My OB (once I found one) told me not to worry, that there is no connection between the mom and baby before 6 weeks. We now have a beautiful, healthy, smart and well-adjusted 2 yo (and a "planned" 2-week old!). While DH and I didn't think we were ready, we quickly learned that you can't "plan" everything in life, and that having our DD was an unexpected blessing that we are truly grateful for!!

This is the OP. I got my ultrasound today.. It was great to see the baby's heart beat. It was reassuring. My hubby was there and he was so excited about seeing the baby for the first time. Thank you all for your supportive and kind words. It really helped to calm me and allow me to make it to my ultrasound. Thanks again.
