need developmental specialist recommendations

Anonymous
Hi,
My son will be three in Sept. We just finished up yesterday with the City of Alexandria's early intervention evaluation (would have gone sooner, but we lived overseas, and the country we lived in was much more lax about developmental issues). They're going to start sending someone to the house to help with some of his speech and behavioral issues. However, they suggested that we also find a devleopmental specialist, who could condut a thorough evaluation for Autism, PDD, Asburger's, etc. Can anyone recommend someone? Do any of these people take insurance? My pediatrician suggested Kennedy Krieger last month, and I'm already on their waiting list (will probably be on it until October). I feel like there is so much waiting involved...I just want someone who can help me put a plan together, so we can really take action. Maybe the woman from Alexandria will be helpful, but if this is Autism, I'm thinking we need to do more!

Thanks

I would post this on the Special Needs board, you might get more responses.

Good luck!!

There is a developmental pediatrician out of INOVA Fairfax that people I know rave about, but for the life of me I can't recall his name. Maybe you could find it by calling there.

I didn't have the level of concerns that it seems you have, but what I did was to get a referral for evaluations at Children's in DC. They have an excellent group of developmental PTs and OTs. If you go this route, I would recommend Katie Parker for PT and Cathy Fox for OT.
