DH has already arranged with our hosts that we'd bring the standard sweet glop with mini marshmallows. It's tasty enough, especially with some extra generous splashes of o.j. and rum, but a bit too sweet and textureless for me. Our hosts would be cool with anything, and DD won't eat sweet potatoes one way or another, but I think DH will be a sourpuss if I diverge from his sainted (not) mother's recipe.
I'll probably just make the glop to keep the peace and try this recipe for home in a few weeks, but it looked quite good: http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/side-dish/recipe-sweet-potato-and-sage-gratin-018999 What are you guys doing with your sweet potatoes? |

Our family sweet potato recipe is sweet potatoes and apples. Sort of like a gratin. Slice candied sweet potatoes and also apples, then alternate layers of each. Sprinkle with brown sugar and dots of butter. Bake for 1 1/2 hours.

| Candied yams. I'm not a fan of the whipped sweet potatoes with marshmallow either. Buy a can of yams, put them in a baking dish, and cover LIBERALLY with Karo corn syrup, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and then pats of butter across the top. Bake at 375 until caramelized and gooey. |

I've made a recipe nearly identical to this one. Am trying this one this year. I think the pecans give it some texture. I'm usually not a fan of the sweet stuff commingling on my plate, but I make an exception for this. |

I am doing a very simple roasted sweet potato dish. Just chunks of sweet potato & Vidalia onion roasted with olive oil & thyme and sprinkled with toasted sliced almonds.
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/roasted-sweet-potatoes--onions/detail.aspx I LOVE sweet potatoes, especially roasted, and I can't stand when people ruin them with brown sugar & marshmallows. I mean, marshmallows? Why?! |

My family's sweet potato casserole have a topping of brown sugar, butter, pecans, and flaked coconut.
I don't like the marshmallow version, but I would not, if I were you, make anything but that if your husband is very attached to having that for Thanksgiving. Some dishes are sacred for the holiday. |
Thanks ladies. Lots of tasty suggestions to keep me busy for a season of sweet potato cooking! For the imminent tuber task, though, I just went ahead and bought the damn marshmallows today. DH has been talking about his mother a lot lately, and it's not a fight I would have won. We've always made his family's recipes for Thanksgiving. Fortunately, our hostess is a great cook who will have a lot of nice savory stuff prepared to counteract the glop. |
| Good for you! I like how you are handling this, with a big heart. "Damn marshmallows"? LOL. That's the spirit of the holiday, and your husband will be happy. (Ask me why I keep the Pillsbury Crescent Rolls on the menu year after year despite the temptation not to buy those tubes of dough!) |
I make baked sweet potato fries. Yum.

I just threw up in my mouth. |
Enjoy your diabeetus. |
Omg I can't stop laughing. Please tell me you spelled it the way wilford brimley used to say it in the commercials on purpose. Please! |
