My daughter attends Crossway Community Montessori school in Kensington which is not only a great school, but also has a Family Leadership Academy at their campus.
The Family Leadership Academy (FLA) is a unique on-campus, educational program designed to give single, economically disadvantaged mothers the tools they need to become effective parents and prepare them to succeed in education, in the workplace, and in the global economy. The curriculum of the FLA involves comprehensive and hands-on, experiential training in four content areas: health and safety, social and family development, financial literacy, and career planning and coaching. http://www.crossway-community.org/ You also might have heard that The Montgomery County Board of Education voted in favor of a proposal for the Crossways Montessori School to become the first charter school in Montgomery county. The school will accommodate students from pre-kindergarden to the third grade and is on the track to open its doors by Fall 2012 Crossway Community Montessori School is hosting an internationally known Montessori speaker coming to the school on December 9th at 6:00pm Upcoming Events "Building Better Brains" - The Neurological Case for Montessori Education Join us for a lively evening with one of the leading voices in Montessori education. Steven J. Hughes, PhD, ABPdN is Chair of the Association Montessori Internationale Global Research Committee and President of the American Academy of Pediatric Neuropsychology. Dr. Hughes is an advocate for activity-based, developmental approaches to education, and is a frequent speaker and consultant to Montessori education organizations around the world. For more than a century, Montessori educators, parents of Montessori children and Montessori children themselves have asserted that, “Montessori works!” However, why Montessori works and what it does (and whether it fully lives up to its billing) remain something of a mystery for many. Steve Hughes explains why there need be no mystery: Using the back drop of neuroscience, Dr. Hughes illustrates how Montessori environments-- and student activity within those environments -- foster the development of complex neural pathways, literally building the architecture of the brain. Light refreshments and tours of Crossway’s Montessori environments will take place at 6:00 p.m. Please register for this event on our website: www.crossway-community.org, by mail, or in person. Please indicate how many tickets you would like at the time of registration. We are asking for a $20/person donation.
