We will driving from DC to Pittsburgh for Thanksgiving. I am pregnant and we have 2 young kids so I really want to minimize being stuck in traffic. The kids do travel pretty well but I haven't been feeling great. We have never done this drive over Thanksgiving before but usually the trip takes about 4 hours (not including stops). Is Saturday traffic bad after Thanksgiving? We are considering sticking around until Monday but not sure as DH may need to travel for work that day. I am most concerned with traffic around Breezewood and also once we are back on the 270. Any advice would be appreciated.
We typically return from Buffalo to the DC area on Saturday. The traffic is usually fine up until Hagerstown, but we don't hit it until about 6 pm. If you are just coming from Pittsburgh, you should be fine if you leave early enough.
Leave early on Saturday. We normally are driving from MA on that Saturday and its a great ride until we reach MD around 4-6 pm. Then its bumper to bumper. If there is any question about the weather give yourself plenty of time and don't dawdle in Pittsburgh Saturday.
I agree. We always leave first thing in the morning to avoid traffic. The later in the day you leave the more you risk sitting in traffic.
You may want to take I-70 to I-81 back to VA/DC, that puts you onto 66East and you will avoid some of the 270 and 495 traffic. We got this way all the time to/from Ohio (northeast), but we live in VA off of 66.
