I'm 7 weeks pregnant and for the last week and a half have experience low-grade nausea throughout the day. However, in the evenings when I get home from work, my nausea gets so much worse. My poor husband asks me what sounds good for dinner, I tell him, and by the time he's prepared it, I can't even look at the food, let alone be in the same room while he eats.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips? |
Oh sister, TOTALLY been there! That is the only time that I felt sick! As much as I hated it, I was just thankful that I didn't feel that crummy all day at work.
It doesn't make it any easier though. And I missed out on tons of good dinners my husband made. What I decided to do was start stockpiling sleep at night. I would get in bed, with ginger ale and crackers by the bedside, relax, and try and sleep. Heaven knows you will miss easy sleeping in your third trimester! (where I am now.) Good luck to you, and congrats on your pregnancy. Remember, LOTS of people have a glorious second trimester when the sick feeling passes. ![]() |
Yes - it lasts all day and I found evening to be worst as well.
I recommend sour foods. Sour altoids were my mainstay for many, many weeks. That and vinegar potato chips. Otherwise, I couldn't even be in the house if he opened the refrigerator. I will warn you that it will likely get worse before it gets better. Don't worry about weight loss. The baby will get what it needs. And if you need to take medicine just to get through the day, there are some safe options (Zofran is a wonder drug). |
I often felt sick in the evenings. I tried two things that often worked (but not always). Have a small snack that mixes protein and sugar before leaving work (if you work) or a bit before dinner. I also survived on crystallized ginger. Sometimes ginger tea worked, but the crystallized ginger really helped. I started eating a piece a bit before my normal times to feel sick, and it really got better. Vernors ginger ale also has more ginger taste in it, and can help.
Good luck to you!!!!!!!! |
My sickness was all in the evening too-- but it went away 2nd trimester, so maybe you will get lucky too. Don't know if this will work for you, but I would always eat a big well-balanced lunch, figuring that dinner might not happen. Then I ate a larger snack before I left work. Then if I couldn't hold dinner down, I wouldn't worry so much about the baby not getting fed. Also, the one meal that for some reason I could usually eat was Kraft mac and cheese. I have heard other women with evening sickness say the same thing. So, you might want to try that once and see what happens? The smell of meat cooking totally did me in though-- I wouldn't let my husband cook it unless I was upstairs with the door shut! |
OP -Do you have an afternoon snack at work?
I found that when I had an empty stomach (either first thing in the morning or after work in the evening) my nausea felt 10x worse. So, I nibbled on crackers and ginger ale at about 4pm. I still didn't feel that great, but it was still better than if I skipped the mid afternoon snack. |
I echo all of this. I had low-grade nausea all day but felt the worst in the evenings. I tried ginger, didn't really help.
I tried to eat throughout the day to keep something in my stomach. I also found that starchy food made me feel the best, such as saltine crackers, warm pita bread with hummus, whole grain eggo waffles with peanut butter (I lived on these, honestly!). I also found fruity popsicles and McDonald's soft serve ice cream cones to be helpful. ![]() And sleep, sleep, sleep. If you feel horrible, go to bed at 7 p.m. Ironically, I was so tired and nauseous yet I felt much worse after I took a nap. So I instead (schedule permitting) would sleep 10-12 hours a night. My nausea ended at around 10 weeks, if it makes you feel any better! I feel great in my second trimester now. |
