Please recommend a college for my DD...

Anonymous
She attends a small public school in MD. Her GPA is ~4.4, class rank top 6%, SAT's ~1800, ACT 27.
She wants to go to school near/in an urban area.
She is undecided about a major, but would like to minor in theater (stage and sound design).
The schools she is interested in so far:
UMBC, UMCP, Ithaca College, MaryMount Manhattan, and Boston University.

She is a senior and we are running out of time!

Please any suggestions and feedback about the above schools would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. She will not consider any school that is affiliated with the Catholic Church!

I'm not much help, but my cousin goes to Ithaca and loves it.

umm are you a troll, with those stats she can pick any college she wants. I would recommend to steer her talents towards a STEM or busines degree and NOT lib arts or else her talents will be wasted. Minoring in bull shit is fine, but make sure she picks a major that actually pays.

Actually, the grades and rank are great but the SAT/ACT scores seem to make the colleges OP lists as target schools. Your list has northern schools, what about College of Charleston? I'd also look at Elon in NC. She could get into Pitt and via consortium take highly regarded theater classes at CMU. Also University of Colorado at Boulder.

Good luck!

Washington & Jefferson College outside of Pittsburgh.

given her standings & performance(s) she might have luck at a private school...Cargnie Mellon, John Hopkins, Columbia, Duke...

my bad i didn't realize 1800 wasn't perfect anymore.

Rice (my alma mater) actually has a thriving theatre program, as well as top-notch STEM. Nice small school but smack in the middle of a big city. (Unfortunately, the city is Houston.

It was never a perfect score. 1600 is the perfect score (for the math + verbal sections).

Each SAT section has a max of 800 points. Back in the day, 1600 was perfect. Colleges still often use just the score from the math and verbal (just like in our day). But the SAT has added a 600 point writing section. So sometimes you see a score and it's not clear if the score is out of 1600 or 2400. Here, OP's DD has a 1900 so it must be out of a possible 2400 (and is roughly equivalent to the ACT score of 27 that OP reported). My DS is a college freshman with similar scores and I can tell you they will not get you into any top colleges (CMU, Duke, Hopkins, Columbia, Rice etc).

I'd look into the colleges that do not require standardized test scores or at least have a more holistic approach to reading applications. Because the grades and rank are so strong (and much higher than her standardizes scores seem to indicate) I think she could do well with one of those.

OP here, thanks to those who recognized I am not a troll!
Part of what is making this so challenging is the fact that she has such good grades and not as great SAT scores.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

Can she take the SAT again?

another option is to attend a community college, get really good grades and transfer in sophmore year. This would also save money.

OP here, yes you are a help! Do you know what your cousin is studying? We might go visit there this weekend.

Ithaca College is not in or near an urban area, but it is a lovely setting and people who go there seem to love it.
