Breast Heat

Anonymous
I'm 27 weeks and I have noticed for the last 8 or so, that to the touch, my breasts feel like they are on fire. There is a noticable temperature difference between them and the rest of my body. They still look normal (except larger), it's just that they feel really warm. I'm sure it's due to all the changes going on there, but it just seems odd. Plus, I haven't seen anything about this in the baby books I've read and I'm wondering if others have expereinced this?

It could be the formation of blood vessels/hormone release (ultimately leading to milk ducts, more breast tissue, etc. in anticipation of feeding the baby).
Since your body temp. is a toasty 98.7 degrees, the added blood flow to the chest area makes it feel warm since the blood vessels are near the surface.
...not sure if I explained that right. I read it somewhere awhile back.

What you are describing does NOT sound normal to me. I've been pregnant twice and have not experienced this. It's probably nothing, but it's certainly worth a call to your doctor.

I wonder if they are hot b/c of them getting bigger, generally, with all the hormones? If you've been to the doc by now, what did s/he say?

OP here - I have an appt. next week, so I haven't had any feedback from the dr yet (and I didn't mention it at my last appt.) I do think it's attributable to hormonal changes, so I'm not too worried, but I will post any feedback I get from the dr. Thanks for the replies.

Definitely ask your dr, but i have realized that the definition for "normal" in pregnancy is very wide since each woman seems to have different symptoms! My breasts get big and also warmer, I think mostly because they are just bigger. Plus this heat does not help!

I have this--its not that the girls feel hot on a daily basis (I don't think about it), but they are much warmer to the touch, esp. the nipples, than the rest of my body. I think its just all the hormones juicing around.

OP: out of curiousity, what did your doc say?

OP here - my doc said that during pregancy the entire body temp rises and it isn't uncommon to feel some of this extra heat released through the breasts. Nothing to be concerned about; not only is it due to higher overall body temp, but it is because there is a lot going on in the breasts themselves. No worries! Thanks for reminding me to follow-up!

Glad to hear all is okay!
