Infertility Support and Discussion
| I am 13 weeks pregnant and just received CVS results of a very serious (and always fatal) chromosonal disorder. How soon after a termination can I expect to get my period again? |
|
first -- so sorry for your loss. my 2nd pregnancy was terminated at about the same time for a chromosonal abnormality (holoprosencephaly). that was early dec and i got pregnant in late february of the following year.
everyone is different -- give yourself time to recover. i had literally picked up a Rx for Clomid and was just waiting for my period to start to start taking it.... and turned out my period never started b/c I was pregnant! best of luck. |
| thanks so much, PP; hugely helpful. And, so glad to hear your happy ending. |
| OP, I'm so sorry for your loss. If you don't mind my asking, can you share who performed the CVS for you? And did you do the procedure after worrisome NT results? If these questions are too painful, please disregard - and all the best to you in having a healthy pregnancy and baby soon. |
| hi PP, OP here. Happy to share. Dr. Pinckert at Greater Washington Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Genetics performed the CVS and he was fabulous. He's well-known in the area (as is Dr. Evelyn Karson who performed my first CVS with my daughter -- she's great too but no longer takes insurance) and i could not have asked for a better person to deliver to that news. Dr. Pinckert's genetic counselor, Jill, is wonderful as well, has helped me through the entire process -- can't say enough good things about them. I did do the NT but i was planning to do the CVS anyway -- i was pretty certain i wanted the diagnostic, as opposed to the screen, but i figured the NT is so easy to do might as well... not sure what i'd do next time, maybe skip the NT and go straight to CVS, either way i'm very, very thankful i did the CVS and would do it again without question. good luck -- and remember -- these things are relatively rare, the vast majority of people come through with healthy babies! |
| 14:56 post -- it sounds like you tried to conceive, on your own, the month your period returned -- in other words after you got your period -- is that correct? |
|
1456 here -- I'm trying to remember... but yes - I think I got a period in late January -- at some point I went to the fertility doc i had been seeing and that's when i got the Rx for Clomid. Since you take the clomid on the first day of your next period, i was charting and doing the OPK thing in the meanwhile -- I figured we would give it a go before I started on drugs.. and obviously, it worked! DS is now 20 mo and is the light of my life.
Of course, ask me about how it's going now... we just started trying again and I forgot how much "work" it is!!! YIKES! |

I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this. I lost a pregnancy at 12 weeks due to age related Downs Syndrome-had a D&C. My period came back about 6 weeks later. I got pregnant the following month, but it was a chemical pregnancy. I got pregnant 5 months later with my son. We decided to have a CVS-had both the NT and CVS at Thomas Jefferson in Phili (recommended by my RE). I had a bad NT-50% chance the baby had a chromosomal disorder. Thankfully-the CVS showed us differently. I think if we decide to have another baby-I'll go straight for the CVS. I was told it was very unlikely to have trisomies back to back-if that helps.
Our doctor told us to wait for ONE good period before we try again. |
| OP I am so sorry for your loss. I recently had to terminate a pregnancy at 18 weeks after a fatal disorder (most likely chromosonal) was discovered at my pre-amnio sonogram. Op - you sound so grounded and hopeful which I find very inspiring. I also greatly appreciate everyone's success stories following a miscarriage/termination. Thank you for sharing. |
