Crib Bumper

To use or not to use? Could anyone tell me what conventional wisdom is on this?

Some say to use it until the baby is old enough to roll over/move around (that's what I did), but some also say that they shouldn't be used at all (unless mesh) because they cause higher carbon dioxide levels in the crib.

Like every other topic, you're likely to get an infinite number of points-of-view...

I know that some people say not to use one... we did and had no issues. I actually took it off when baby could pull up, because they say that babies can use it to climb out of the crib. DD kept bumping her head on the rails, so DH requested we put it back on. Still no problems - DD is walking/running/climbing, but no problems with the bumper.

just met with a pediatrician that I will use for our baby once s/he arrives. the pediatrician advised against having anything in the crib, including bumpers in order to safeguard against crib. only a tight sheet and a mobile if high enough that baby cannot get strangled.

When our DD started rolling around and repeatedly bumped her head on the crib slats I caved in and bought a breathable bumper. By the age/time she rolled, she was sorta of "out of the SIDS danger" window. Plus, like I said, it was a breathable mesh bumper so I was never worried.

Like the PP said, I tight sheet and a hanging mobile is all you need.

Thanks.

There was recently another thread about this. I personally still use bumpers for my 22 month old.

I think people like them because they are cute and make the crib look "finished." I'm glad I skipped it because 1) they're expensive, 2) it's easier to see ds in the crib without one, 3) air flow into the crib seems better without one, and 4) I'm sure ds, now 6 months, would have figured out a way to unfasten it and then who knows what.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission does a lot of outreach and education on crib safety and bumpers are strongly discouraged.
