Big Gazette article two weeks ago about how MCPS may consider a county wide boundary change plan to alleviate overcrowding. Haven't seen any followup on this. Is this a serious thing that they would consider changing the boundaries for their roughly 200 schools? Wouldn't that be met by lots of upset parents? |
I know I'd be pissed. I bought into my neighborhood planning for my children to go to BCC. It's bad enough there's a possibility that they may not go to Westland.

I don't think it will happen, but I'd be all for it if it provided relief to the overcrowding. The current boundries in our cluster are crazy. There are several closer schools than the ones that we are zoned for. I have to think that looking at the boundries county wide, we would be able to come up with some solutions that would save transportation dollars to be reappropriated to the classroom. |
I imagine this might be a possibility. I am unsure when the last boundaries were drawn up but things change over time and if reseting boundaries can keep the country from having to spend additional money on capital projects then it probably makes sense. |
I know several families from our neighborhood who either left Westland or opted for private out of elem school due to the overcrowding. I have a hard time relating to all this love of Westland. What's to love about a seriously overcrowded middle school? |
I did not read the Gazette article, but boundary changes were discussed at this week's PTA meeting.
Our principal said he is only aware of 2. The one with BCC and a likely one, assuming that Richard Montgomery ES #5 is funded and build. The latter would mainly be an elementary school boundary study since RM has only 1 middle school/high school in its cluster. He also said something to the effect that it would be political suicide to redraw the entire MCPS boundary. The Gazette has gotten things wrong in the past (so has the Post, for that matter). This could be another example of inaccuracy in journalism. |

Above is the link to the article OP is referring to. It would not surprise me if they did go with a boundary change somewhere in the county. Back in the early 90s, Wooton neighborhoods were redistricted to RM. That was incredibly unpopular at the time. |
Westland isnt even at capacity the biggest middle school is Pyle and it is over capacity |
