is the mornings?

What time would I need to leave to be downtown DC by 8:30am or 9am?

How about coming home? About 5 or 6pm?

I live in FH. The commute is pretty easy. I cut through the city to get to Arlington and it takes me 25 minutes. So, I imagine downtown is something like 15-20.

Car or metro? And where downtown?

I metro from Cleveland Park to the west end of downtown. Takes me about 22 minutes door to door.

By car? 20-30 minutes if you leave just before 8. If you leave after 8, longer.

I used to drive from Wisconsin @ Fessenden to a garage at 8th and E. OP's exact question.

There's no way in hell it ever took 20 minutes. Even at 10 pm, when I was often returning home. Red lights preclude the fantasy of a 20-min trip.

OP, I'd say count on 40 minutes of driving time, which spans the time you put your key in the ignition to the time you take it out of the ignition and lock the door. No fudging.

I drive from AU Park to near L'Enfant. I leave a little before 8AM, drop my daughter off at daycare and I am at my desk by 8:45 each morning.

Wisconsin Ave recently has been a mess between Sidwell and Mass. If I would get out of the house before 7:45 it would definitely take 7-10 minutes off the commute. (but you need to be smart on what lane to drive in so you do not get stuck behind cars turning for Sidwell, NCS or STA)

In the evening it is about the same. If I am driving before 5PM, I could definitly get across the city and home after picking up a child before 6PM.

I recently moved to the neighorhood and noticed this too @ Wisconsin near Sidwell and NCS/STA. It is super slow after 7:45. I figured this was because of the school year, but is it unusual, even for the time of the year.

If you can swing it, so much easier leaving at 7:30 and returning at 4:30. Twenty/30 minutes for me. 45 if you leave after 8:00 or after 5/5:15.

Metro is the fastest bet, or biking.

That said, with the construction at Calvert and Conn., the back-ups on Wisconsin are worse. When that project is completed, it should make life easier for the drivers.

Still, given it is seven stops on the red line, I cannot imagine why you would want to drive.
