The last few weeks each avocado I've purchased has ended up being rather rubbery -- to the point where I cannot mush it into a spread. At first I was thinking I didn't let it ripen properly etc, but now I've decided it's the avocado. I've made purchases at three stores. Do I just need to give up on avocados for a while until they are back in season or something? Is there even a season? TIA
yes, i usually give up on avocados and wait for the California ones to come back. i think in march or april? California avocados are usually very good. other countries are hit or miss.
Always make sure you're buying Hass avocados with the really dark green skin and then wait until they're pretty soft. Good luck!
I've been having the same issue and thought it was just me. Wait for the right season, I guess.
put them in a paper bag until they get really soft. I second the Haas suggestion, as well.
You buy them when they are not ripe and you wrap them in aluminium until they become ripe.
Was the skin extremely smooth and the fruit very large? It may not have been a Haas avocado. 80% of the world's avocados are Haas. So delish. The other smooth skinned large ones are not Haas variety. And they are watery and tasteless, imo.
