| I studied five years about 20 years ago, and was pretty good. Over time, I have lost a lot, especially confidence to speak. Now I think I am about at the level they teach in 4th year HS Chinese classes, judging by text books. Any recommendations for good solution for a formerly good speaker? (I.e. really don't need beginning.) |

| OP, I'm impressed. Did you learn from a class setting, or private lessons? I've never taken lessons, and have tried learning on my own, but it wasn't going too far. |

OP - do you want to work on your speaking/listening or writing and reading as well? If it is just the speaking/listening I would post on Craigslist to do language exchange with someone.
As for class - I believe Georgetown and George Mason both have Mandarin classes that might be a good fit for you. Good luck! |

I'm OP - I started in college and continued in graduate school and Taiwan. Many years ago. My listening is the worst, but I guess I'd like to brush up on all aspects including reading. And a language exchange can be fairly dicey, so I want something more structured. Thanks for the tip as to schools.
Can non-foreign service officers take classes at the Foreign Service Institute (or some name close to that) in Virginia? I think I also heard of a Department of Commerce class. |
