Pain after egg retrieval?

Anonymous
Could anyone share your stories about egg retrieval?

I started my very 1st IVF cycle with lupron (20 units for 2 weeks).
From what I found online, women are generally put to sleep while eggs are aspirated by the needle.
I am wondering about the pain if there is any, after waking up from that medicated sleep.

1. How did it feel after the egg retrieval?
2. If you are a working professional, were you able to return to work right after your eggs are retrieved?

Will I feel throwing up? Any heavy cramps? Should I take the whole day off?
I have no idea what to expect.
Any comments is deeply appreciated.
Thank you.

A little woozy after coming out of the anestesia. Just a little achy (but nothing bad). Unfortunately, I never had many eggs, so perhaps this is the reason. (Less eggs=less probing.) The emotional is worse than the physical. Good luck!

Pp here. Forgot to answer your other question. Returned to work the next day.

i had some cramping, but not a lot of pain. I planned to just stay in bed that day and watch movies and that is what i did. I did vomit a couple times, but it was from the anesthesia which is common for me. You should definitely be able to go to work the next day, but i would take the entire day off for ER and just rest so your body can heal.

The more eggs you have the more pain. I had 15 eggs once, and felt like a truck drove through my insides. I had 7 retrieved another time and didn't feel a whole lot of pain. It's like cramps. Real bad ones. You won't be able to go back to work that day.

4:57 again. I had 18 eggs and did not have much pain at all. I'm sure it varies from person to person.

I always took ER day off of work -- I'd go home and sleep for about 4 hours to sleep off the anesthesia. Also, with one of my ERs something went wrong and I had a lot of bleeding (basically looked like that scene from the end of the movie Carrie from the waste down). They were concerned that I might need a blood transfusion and I really had to take it easy. THat is rare, but you may have some bleeding (a maxi pad worth). In fact, you may want to bring your own pads since the ones they give you will likely be the super thick kind that will make you feel like you went to the nurse's office in junior high.

I had 17 eggs. No pain, no nausea. I was back at work the next day. I would say I felt bloated and tender leading up to the ER and it took a solid 5 days post ER for that feeling to go away. But it was manageable. I have a toddler and I was lifting him the next day.

Good luck.

I had 13 eggs retrieved. I felt fine the day I got back from ER. Oddly enough the pain didn't kick in until 2 days later. That's when I had to start the Vicodin. My advise, even if you feel fine, do take the vicodin post egg retrieval.

I had 18 retrieved late in the day. Once the anesthesia wore off I was in a huge amount of pain. I ended up staying home the next day and by the following morning (1 1/2 days later) I could walk around but was still in pain. It took almost a week for me to get back to normal. I have friends who went back to work the same day so I wasn't expecting pain but I guess I just depends on the person. Good luck!

I had 42 eggs retrieved. I took the entire day off. I was not nauseous, but I was a bit crampy/sore.

I did not have any symptoms during stims. But soon after the egg retrieval I had a feeling of heavy bloating in the pelvic area. I had difficulty bending down. That lasted for about a day. I would suggest a day off from work irrespective of the pain level. Much needed relaxation after anesthesia.

42 eggs?!! I didn't even know that was possible. I had 21 and they said I was a rock star so I assumed that was on the high end. With 21 I was in a lot of pain right after retrieval at 3 or 4 pm but fine and went to work the next day.
