I like that song too and never really paid attention to the lyrics. Last weekend my brother told me it was about Columbine. I responded, "I really didn't need to know that."

I like that song too and even checked out the lyrics before downloading it...still didn't realize what it was about!

Same thing happened to me!!

I put it on my ipod and jogged along to it for a year before it occurred to me the narrator is talking about taking his gun and shooting all the other kids who tend to wear cool sneakers.

The thing that gets me is they play it on mainstream kid friendly radio.....not to be all Tipper Gore-ish about it..

What the hell is a "pumped up kick" anyways?

fancy sneakers (worn untied so as to kick them off)

I just realized that the lyrics to the Britney song my 5 year old and I jam to in the car contains a reference to a hand job. Oops!

What do you think "rock and roll" means?

Had never heard of it so I just went to YouTube to listen to it.

Did you sing along with the lyrics? Because the following line is part of the chorus and even if you don't know what pumped up kicks are, the part in bold is clearly not very sweet:

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Songs are poetry set to music. There's Dr. Suess and there's Sylvia Plath and everything in between. I think the songs subject is part of makes it a good song. Should it be on the radio? American Pie was in the seventies.

Yes, songs about sex are much worse than songs about murder.

I have to agree. I'm not as offended about songs related to sex. But, the murder songs tend to get me. Not sure why there is a double standard. I don't love ones with demeaning lyrics, but just regular, plain old sexy songs are fine. Songs about shooting people don't seem as harmless.

love the song

Life can suck. Why can't songs reflect that?
