Have you thought about where you want to retire?

Friends are looking into retirement places to live but I can't think of where I would want to live permanently other than home

DH definitely does not want to retire in the DC area. He wants to go back to LA. I'd rather be here if our friends are all still here (probably not) or in NYC if they all move away. Realistically, none of these options are particularly affordable so it's all pipe dreams. Anyway, I've known lots of people who moved to rural communities to retire only to change their minds quickly once they realized they had no friends in the new place. I think it's important to factor that in. Making new, true friends can be very difficult.

We're older parents and our youngest won't even graduate from high school until we're retirement age. As far as we've gotten in thinking about retirement is that we want a smaller house and yard and if we stay in the area we want to move into DC. But we'd also like someplace warmer and someplace near our kids- we're hoping for grandkids.

Want to stay in DC if we can afford it. Ideal thing would be to have a condo here and another home in a more rural area but don't know if that will be doable.

Anywhere but here.

Been here my whole life and I want out. Probably near any grandkids, both of us like NYC, so maybe a sublet for a couple of months each year. Not sure yet.

We used to think the Carolina coast, but now we think we are just going to be vagabonds for a year or two if we are in good health. Do a six month to a year rental in the Virgin Islands, then some other place, and then settle down after that.

Truth is . . . once you have grandchildren, all planning is off! Seriously, although we'd love to be in the mountains or close to the beach, we'd rather be near our children and grandchildren--and we are!

No brainer. Apartment in Paris! But realistically, we'll probably stay in the area, in a nice lo-maintenance condo or smaller house. Depends on where our kids are tho. I definitely want to be near them, and of course near the grandchildren!! But I'll be in my 80s when that happens, since I'm an older parent.

We will not be retiring until well after our youngest is out of college, and he is in 2nd grade right now. So no, we have not thought about where we want to retire.

close to a beach, no place with snow

Move while we're still young enough to make new friends.
