Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| I just bought my DD some clothes that were on sale...She is almost 6 months and almost 20 lbs. So I bought the size for 22-26 lbs so she could get more use out of it. Well, that size turns out to be what they call "18 months!" Wow. She's been in the upper percentiles for weight (and height) but is she that far off the chart now that she is wearing clothes for a child 3 times her age?? I guess Children's Place clothing runs small... |
| My son has been wearing 18 months since 7 months-clothes just run small I think. Children's place by the way is great because there stuff does not shrink as much as the gap or carters! |
| That hasn't been my experience. I find they run more true to size than gymboree (which I think are large), but still big. My 2.5 year old is wearing 18 month old clothes from the children's place (and has been since last summer). He's 27 pounds, slim, and not in diapers. Makes a difference. Look at the tag - it also has a height guideline, which I bet your daughter isn't within. |
| My daughter is 4 mo old, 50% weight, 95% height. Due to her height, she wears 12 mo. I have found that all baby clothes shrink a lot. |
| I think they run pretty true to size. My 50%tile 2 year old (just turned 2) wears a 24m/2T there. His 5%tile twin wears a 12m. |
| Yes, a not even 6 month old baby weighing 20 lbs is very large. I think my son might have weighed 20 lbs around his first bday. The CP clothes are great though. I have found the pants to run large for my son though. I bought cargo pants for his when he was 18 months old (the pants were 18 months) They just fit him late this spring (close to his 3rd bday!) |

I also think they run true to size. (Almost 20 lbs for a 6-month-old girl is really big--our DD (50th percentile both weight and height) didn't hit 20 lbs until she was already over a year old.)

I find many of their girls clothes, especially the bottoms, to be cut ridiculously narrow and tight. I have at times thought of them as contributing to body image distortion starting in infancy. Plus the sexualization of some of them is very disturbing (leopard prints, comments on the shirts, etc.).
We typically now buy boys' bottoms and girls' tops. My dd is and always has been slender for her height. |
| My daughter hit 20 pounds at around 8 months. 80-90th percentile in both height and weight. She's still wearing her CP six-month clothes. Maybe specific items are sized differently? |

My generalization: Children's Place runs small, especially for older toddlers.
Once upon a time, I made a chart of baby clothes sizes (!) from the brands we used at one point--based on length, not weight, since my child was a higher percentile in height. Children's Place 18 months based on length was same as some other 12-18 month brands (Baby Gap, Carter's, Gymboree), but equivalent to to a 6-12 or 12 in others (Land's End, Little Me, Osh Kosh, Talbots, First Impressions). The difference gets more dramatic later. A 36 mo./3T Children's Place was equivalent in length to a 2T in every other brand I checked (Baby Gap, Carter's, Gymboree, Land's End, Talbots). In some brands, the Children's Place 3T was the same as a 24-month size (First Impressions, Osh Kosh). The other thing to remember, OP, is that kids start wearing the same size for longer once they're toddlers--a 2T outfit for spring may still fit your child in fall. If the outfit fits well enough, go ahead and go up in size. But no point in having your child swim in bigger clothes for months! |

My 13 month old is 34 pounds and 34 inches tall, he wears 3t shorts and 4t pants/shirts from Children's Place. The pants are a little long but they fit his tummy. I am amazed at children's clothes in general. He wears a 3 at the Gap and 3t at Gymboree. By his weight he should be in a 4 but the clothes are super large in size 4.
Gymboree is having an awesome sale right now. |
| When my ds was 6 months old, he was in size 12 month. So I bought a lot of clothes in the 18 month size, anticipating that he would be fitting into them soon. But, they slow down a lot in their weight gain after the first 6-12 months. DS is now 2, but still can wear the 18 month old sizes. So, I wouldn't think of your child being 3 times the normal size. I bet when he gets to be about 18 months old, he could still fit into those clothes you bought now, because his growth may slow down. |
| Thanks everyone for the replies...I now realize how much variation there is in children's clothing (and children). It seems only men's clothing is truly standardized, well some things anyway like dress shirts. I think her growth will level off. I am not concerned about it, as long as the pediatrician isn't. I just want her to be comfortable in what she's wearing so she can play, be active, etc. Nice job PP with the size chart! And the PP who suggested that differernt items at the CP are different might be right: her 9 month size footie pj's fit great with some room to grow. ---OP |
| This is really interesting -I never considered that the clothes shrank. I just assumed DD was growing! |
Leopard print is sexual? Do others agree??? |
