My hubby and I have issues! I need some advice. He bought a generator to run electricity when the lights go out b/c he has some amateur servers running (no big clients) in our basement and he is OBSESSED with keeping them up and running.
The generator cost about $700 and he did not ask me if he could buy it. We had an ENORMOUS blow out fight when he told me he bought it. To top it off, the lights went out during Hurricane Irene and he started up the generator. All hell broke loose -- we have a new baby (4 months) and my hubby turned on the generator and the whole house reeked of exhaust. It was so freaking loud, the baby and I could not sleep. I had to lock myself in a room with the baby and open the window (during a freaking hurricane) to avoid the exhaust smell. I could not drive anywhere b/c there was a hurricane! Anyway, I was so upset, he denied the house smelled of exhaust, he called me crazy for freaking out and it was a nightmare. Now I live in absolute FEAR of the lights going out b/c he will run the generator again. I seriously fear for the health of my child and myself b/c of the fumes from the generator. He ran it outside, but the fumes are so intense, they came in the door even though it was closed. What the hell do I do? Do people need permits to run generators? can I call the police b/c I feel like my baby is in danger? Will they laugh at me? there is no domestic abuse, so I am not sure the police can do anything. I truly hate my husband for this. This generator might lead us to a divorce. My priority is the baby and if protecting her health means a divorce than so be it. How can i get rid of this generator or stop him from using it??? Someone give me some cleve ideas please!!! |
| How far away from the house is it? |
|
Is he running it in the house?
Do you have carbon monoxide detectors? |
| This is crazy. I feel bad for you husband. |
| Its about 4 feet from the back door and I just bought carbon monoxide detectors |
OP, ignore this bitch. You are 100% right. |
| thank you! Sometimes I feel like there are hubby's lurking on this board writing in defense of bad husband behavior! |
| Sorry but excuse me while I laugh..... you are thinking about getting a divorce over a generator? I think it is freaking hilarious. Seriously, he probably bought a cheap generator and ran the thing too close to the house. There should be no fumes coming out the generator. And you would call the police over the generator? Lady, calm down.... Just help your husband figure out what the hell is wrong with the generator and keep on using it. It is a great investment and being in this area, you need it. |
Too close to the house! Should be about 15 feet away. If fumes are being brought into the house, it should be common sense, that it is way too close to the house. |
| I would call the fire department, not the police. |

Your husband sounds like a complete asshole, and correctly or not you believe that you have to call the cops on him to bring him around. I think your problems go far beyond this generator.
This maneuvering around each other is completely bananas. You need to find a way to make decisions jointly. |
| 4ft is waaay to close and you might be just a bit too upset right now. 700 is actually cheap for a generator (what is the wattage?). While being too close you also get what you pay for. Suggest getting a honda (EU Super Silent series) and setting it waaay back from the house. This seems funny now and everyone is lucky nothing happened, people die every year from this. Your DH should read up on generator safety. As it is, he sounds like a moron and asshole. |
I think they both sound like morons, no offense. I think the husband is stubborn but bought the generator for the baby which I think is great. However, not a good generator. Wife needs to stop overreacting. Trying to get your husband locked up? I do not get it. Like someone else said, I think you all have problems that go further than a generator. |
| ^correct but he bought the generators for servers in the basement. |
|
Jesus, it's a generator. He's not building a chemical weapons plant in your basement. Just buy a longer extension cord. Or buy a quieter generator. Whatever, fix the problem. How hard was that?
Seriously if this put your marriage in jeopardy, you haven't got a chance. I can only hope that this is new motherhood and sleep deprivation talking. |
