I have a high-risk pregnancy and have been the hospital for 4 weeks. I'm going to have a c-section 2 weeks from now at 36 wks. My shower was canceled and i have only one set of onesies that a friend gave me.
What do I need in terms of clothing right away to leave to hospital? hat, socks, blankets? |
You might want to get a set of non-onesy t-shirts (can get w/ties or buttons so they don't need to go over baby's head - that was easier for us when our son was newborn) for until your baby's umbilical cord comes off - assuming baby won't be outside for very long (since you can bring the car right up to the hospital when leaving and hopefully be dropped off right in front of the house), you don't need to bundle the baby too much and can mostly rely on blankets over light clothes. the hospital should let you keep the hat your baby wears in the hospital, and that hat fit much better than any others we found for when our baby was very young. I think socks, blankets (several - both hospital-style light blankets and at least one warm blanket), and t-shirts should cover it - but you will need LOTS of changes of clothing for when the baby is first home since you're likely to be going through several outfits a day with spitups and leaky diapers. (Do you have access to computer there? maybe you could order stuff online to be waiting when you get home??)

Maybe a few Carter's sleepers or something similar. A warm blanket. |
We also ended up needing hand mits because DD kept scratching her pretty little face. Unfortunately, they didn't stay on her hands very well.
Hats are good as PP stated. How about a long sleeve onsie? Our DD didn't spit up much and the diapers we had fit well so we didn't really go through too many outfit changes in a day. The nurse told me that babies (especially newborns) have a hard time regulating their own body temperature so you can assist them by putting your hand on their back. If it feels warm/cold then adjust clothing. Good luck. |
Since you're giving birth in 2 weeks you obviously need warm things. You probably won't be doing much outside in the first few days but you still need to bring the baby home and usually also have to go to the pediatrician soon after birth. My daughter is 5 months old right now and when I take her outside she wears something with long sleeves (like a "sleeper" with feet for example), a warm fleece suit over that, a warm hat, and usually a blanket over all that. There is something called a "Bundle Me" which is a fleece insert for your carseat. It's very warm and you can use it instead of a coat or blanket.
For the home I would recommend some sleeper-type outfits with feet (sorry don't know the proper term for them). You don't want to bother with socks at this point, they don't stay on too long. |
If you mean JUST to get you from hospital to home, I would bring a long sleeve t-shirt (not onesie)--preferably one with little flaps to cover the hands to prevent the little baby from scratching him/herself, and one outfit to put over the t-shirt. You will need the smallest size you can find. My kids were huge--both between 9 and 10 lbs., and even they were swimming in 0-3 month outfits (sleepers were ok, but the cute little two piece outfits were huge for the first couple weeks). Also bring a hat and some kind of warm blanket to get from building to car.
On another note-- bring little nail clippers or at least baby emery boards. They will not provide them for you at the hospital, nor will they cut the babies nails (at least not at Alexandria). My poor daughter was a scratched up mess until I sent my mom home to get the clippers. |
