| I really don't understand this scorecard. Why are some of my school's scores outside of the "possible scoring range"? |
People believe what they want to believe. I think it is time for the CMI Board to make some changes in leadership, but I don’t think they will. |
|
I am baffled by these tables and the results. There is just no way Eliot-Hine is one of the 10 worst schools in the city. I toured and I know people who send their kids there. I would be comfortable sending DD10 there next year. These weird equations have produced some very odd results. We'll take the money, but come on. It's nowhere near that bad.
It must suck to be one of the actual 10 worst schools in the city and miss out on so much money because of this strange calculation. |
That has to do with the floor and target (fwiw there are floors and targets in the PCSB tier reports, but they aren’t visible). See page 2 of this fact sheet for a brief explanation. https://osse.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/osse/page_content/attachments/STAR%20Brochure_vFinal_0.pdf |
So what happens if it's below the scoring range? do they adjust it up? How can we know if the numbers are right? The Profile tab is still wrong about enrollment data. |
I think it means the school gets zero points? Which seems silly because then a school that was very close to the floor and a school that was way below the floor would score the same. |
| They get zero. |
They may not be one of the worst schools but they performed abysmally on PARCC last year, which determines most of the STAR rating. Put aside the formula there are issues with proficiency. http://results.osse.dc.gov/school/407 |
| It's weird that just a handful of schools are getting money. If I were a parent at a high one-star school I'd be furious. Is Langley really doing that much worse than CW Harris or Patterson? I see that it adds up to a different number, but is the difference really meaningful enough to mean one school gets six figures and another gets nothing? |
Right. So if a school did just a few decimal points better on certain metrics, the score could jump quite a bit. Is there any way that we can check the calculations? I just have no confidence in OSSE to do this right. |
Considering the picture on Wilson's page isn't actually Wilson HS, I am not surprised there is other information wrong there. |
Where does the additional money come from? |
OSSE announced it yesterday - $1 million over next 3 years for each of the lowest performers. Of course DCPS or the Council could allocate more if they chose to. |
| Question: If student turnover is a factor, aren't DCPS elementary schools that have bad feeder patterns to an undesirable middle school at a disadvantage? Or for charter elementaries that have no feeder, aren't they also at a disadvantage because kids jump ship to get into a desirable middle? |
Not seeing the same issues with charter profiles, suggesting a DCPS data entry or database problem. The testing data originated with OSSE so it’s probably accurate or at least consistent with what was released in Sept/Oct. |
