What on earth makes you think that African-Americans are the only group that has been subject to extreme discrimination, has locked legal parity, and has suffered atrocities? This happens across the globe. This entire thread, there has been so much blame, and few if any actual recommendations as to how to move forward. And this is on a thread that is specifically seeking tips from people who are wealthy. Why not open minds to think about any tips that resonate for a readers circumstances, knowing that obviously not everything will apply? |
No one thinks African Americans are the only peoples that have suffered. The solution is to let nature take its course. African Americans will continue to grow in success and prosperity in this generation and the generations to come. |

How did a thread in the money forum turn into a fight re slavery??
In terms of secrets of rich people -- I'd say INVEST as early and as often as you can. Put everything you can in your 401k starting day 1 -- doesn't matter if it's 18.5k total or if you can only put in a few thousand. Have some kind of plan for additional, non retirement investments. Again it's best if it can be $x/month every month. But if that's just not doable, put in money whenever you can -- even if it's a few hundred here and a few thousand there. And don't do anything "fancy" with the money -- straight up S&P ETF or maybe a low cost blue chip fund. Those investments in the 401k and brokerage will add up over time as you continue to live your daily life and suddenly you notice you have a not insignificant net worth in a few years. |
| Choose the right family to be born into. |
+1. If you have a choice (and most often you don't) -- all else being equal, try to pick the employment offers with firms that have 401k matches. Was in an industry for 8 yrs where a 401k match just wasn't a think, so I was slogging away with my 18k. 3 yrs ago switched jobs bc I was forced to -- landed at a place with a 7% match -- I'm shocked how quick retirement money adds up now with me putting in 18.5k and the co. putting in another 12.5k. I don't like the job and don't want to stay forever, yet I'm taking the match as long as I can get it. |
But it’s very different to be here for 10 plus generations versus just 1 or 2. If you compare African Americans to white American families that have been in this country for generations there is a gap. Many immigrants have families in other countries that may not have “made” it by some of these standards. I think everyone should work hard. I’m black and my father’s 9th grade English teacher refused to teach his class. My grandparents went to school at black only public schools. Their parents could only get service jobs because they were denied to live, go to school(college) etc. Today my family is doing well, but not every AA family has overcome some of these obstacles. In life there are already a million problems. And To be honest AA have really come a long way. I suggest you check out the museum in dc. It gives a great background. |
We don't spend money on flashy things. Carrying anything with a gucci logo is tacky. Always investing, always max out 401k. Drive a cheap car that you pay for in cash. |
