That's not what he said. He kept calling them illegal aliens and claimed they are stealing jobs. He said that they'd rushed to the border in recent years upon DACA going into effect, which is a bald faced lie. He demonized these children. These children who were brought here when they were too young to make choices for themselves, and have by and large never known another home. And he looked gleeful while he did it. It was monstrous.

I don't think one votes for a specific person, per se. He or she is really voting for the party platform, which involves all sorts of issues: illegal immigration, the SCOTUS, individual and corporate tax rates, health care, abortion, national security, and so on. It's rare that one person offers all that a voter is looking for, but people look at all the issues, decide which ones are most important, and make their decision based on that. One factors in character and personality, too, but when both candidates are so personally flawed, as were in this past election, the issues become the bigger driver.
