I don’t blame the left, I blame the doctors that put him on drugs and the parents that told him you can be whatever gender you want to.

This. The medical establishment should be ashamed. They scare parents into these treatments.

+1. Big pharma is on steroids.

This country has a gun problem. All the arguing about the shooter is stupid and pointless. More kids are dead because this country cares more about guns than it does children. FFS.

Why yes. IT DOES MATTER.

This country has a mental health problem. Don't add to it with the gender dysphoria wars, GD it.

It was a white “female” who shot up the church!!!

If she was a trans female, liberals always say a trans female is a female! You can’t go back not and call him a man!

This would make all the female trans athletes competing in women’s sports men. You can have it both ways liberals.

Actually, for the athletic competition it depends on how long they have been transitioning... by ncaa rules.

If he didn't have access to guns, he couldn't have killed to innocent children. He couldn't have shot over a dozen others.

Anyone who does not see this, is complicit.

Exactly.

It’s not HER fault - THE GUN MADE HER MURDER THOSE CHILDREN!!! She’s a victim too!

Also, spoons and forks made me fat.

This.

He killed himself with a self-inflicted gunshot, ONLY when the cops showed up with their guns.

If ONLY some trained person had been on site with a weapon to IMMEDIATELY shoot back at him, rather than having to wait for law enforcement.

Real life is not like a movie. Most people are going to hesitate, get nervous, or panic in these situations. That is not a reliable option.

Liar. Trained and experienced armed people are essential.

And trained and experienced armed people aren’t that hard to find. They just need to be allowed to be armed in these places. Most of the time, it’s not permitted. And since they’re not criminals and follow rules, they’re unarmed, despite being the type of people who could be relied on to stop stuff like this before the police can get there.

The problem in our individualistic society is that no one is willing to say "That guy is a psycho/pervert/freak and needs to be watched like a hawk." Instead it's "you do you!" Evil walks among us and we can't deny it even if the media doesn't want us to think about it. They want us to think of this like a bad tornado, just something that happens.

There isn’t enough of a mechanism to do something with these people. The people who do these crimes typically are not normal people who recently slipped into problems. Most of them have life long antisocial and troubling behaviors.

Mental hospitals.
And don't say "But Reagan" because he caved to a lobby that started in the 60s with the idiotic "One flew over the cuckoos nest" that fooled people into thinking every free spirit was in danger of forced electroshock therapy to turn them into Don Draper. Why he caved I don't know, it was before my time. But it's been a rotten failure.

This is correct.

The movement was called “de-institutionalization” and it quite effectively closed-down virtually every in-patient mental health facility in existence at the time (the so-called “insane asylums.”

Problem was: they replaced the much-needed mental health services with: nothing. Or virtually nothing.

They simply put the severely mentally ill people out on the street, or they dumped them on ill-equipped family (who then turned the patient out, onto the street).

Why does everyone wonder why we have so many severely-mentally-ill people living on our streets?

Sure: reform was needed by the 60s, but reform did kit happen. Shuttering and elimination happened.

Bring back in-patient hospitals, like they still have in the rest of the developed world.

My Japanese BIL couldn't believe the army of homeless screaming and flailing in my city. "In my country they would be in the hospital."
Me (explaining)
Him "But if the government won't pay then their families could pool their money and pay. Anything to get them in a hospital."
Me "You don't understand. There is no hospital."

This, exactly.

Japan has it figured out. The EU has it figured out:

- sick people need to be in a hospital if they are a danger to themselves or to others. And yes: dangerously ill people may not be allowed to leave that hospital while they are a risk to others.

I agree we should emulate Japan. It also has very strict gun control laws-any gun owner has to undergo a background check, a home visit, psychological evaluation and mandatory training.

+1 Let's do that in America. You're all for law and order, right MAGAs?

A confirmed white male. I’m not surprised.

A confirmed trump-hater who targeted Catholic children. I’m not surprised.

I'm not surprised that you will make this about your disgusting politics instead of a country with easily accessible guns that are killing our children, STFU!

The country has tens of millions of guns already in circulation. Banning them won’t do anything. The issue is institutionalizing these nut jobs and throwing away the key. Notice how mass shootings became a regular thing after Reagan opened the mental institutions? Attrocities like this didn’t happen in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. Guns were around then too.

We need to commit way more people to mental asylums starting now or more children will die.

I assume disagreeing with Ronald Reagan is far right now, huh?

That's your opinion not a fact. Australia removed guns from circulation in 1996 for all but law enforcement officials after a mass shooting and hasn't had a mass shooting since then.

No. Mass. Shooting. Since. 1996. in. Australia.

We have them weekly in the USA.

UK did something similar after a mass shooting.

Only the US throws up its hands and says, "It's too hard.. wah".

Australia did not “remov[e] guns from circulation in 1996 for all but law enforcement officials.” It implemented regulations on certain types of firearms and some owners of such firearms “surrendered” them. The others simply left them wherever they were and, as is predictable for inanimate objects, they have not been heard of since.

Australia is an island. England is an island with a long history of rigid social stratification and a deep distrust of “poors” having access to weapons, except when it served the interest of the ruling class for that temporarily to be allowed. Nowadays even Granny’s pinking shears are considered offensive.

Japan is an island with a centuries old prohibition on weapon ownership outside a selected warrior caste. It is a rigid, non-heterogenous society. Even so, the gangsters have all the firearms they want and a recent political assassination demonstrated that a person who wants a firearm there can find a way to get one.

Comparing any of these places to the United States, with its highly mixed and mobile population and enormous, porous borders, is a non-sequiter.

The idea that firearms in the United States are lightly controlled is simply asinine. Laws in place since the 60’s have required some form of registration for original sales. Criminals and actively mentally ill individuals cannot legally possess firearms. Criminal misuse of firearms is unlawful.

There is no magic law that will prevent criminal psychopaths from accessing firearms as long as the criminal psychopaths are free to roam about. There is no magic magnet that can miraculously lift away all of the millions of firearms in existence, and if that did happen the same smugglers who have flooded the country with narcotics forthwith would resupply the criminal demand.

One is compelled to inquire why these terrible events occur now, with all the multiple overlapping federal, state and local gun laws, when they did not happen “back in the old days,” when people kept guns in their closet or on a display rack, kids took hunting and “plinking” guns to school and left them in vehicles for after school recreation, and even used the school metal shop to repair them.

There are things we can try. Just because we can't ever 100% prevent mass shootings doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

Close all the loopholes. It's crazy that people can buy a gun through a private sale without going through a background check. Prosecute people who don't follow laws (this is be a MAGA mantra, right?). Oh, I get it, MAGA doesn't want more gun laws because that would mean they'd have to actually follow their own matra, and they don't want to do that.

Per the Police Chief the suspect purchased the guns legally.
