I'm putting all of my votes to new candidates for city council. I'm hoping at least one of them can knock off an incumbent. I deeply hope that incumbent will be Canek.

That is a good strategy because they do it with rankings over who has the most votes.

There are so many "status quo" candidates because most voters in Alexandria don't consider the arena proposal and especially ZFH to be "debacles". If you're prone to catastrophizing these issues, you're in the minority in this city, I'm afraid.

Lol imagine being so out of touch with reality that you think the arena was supported by the majority.

Great, so you agree that a majority of Americans like Trump. I hope that makes you feel safe.

Er...in elections, he's never gotten the majority of votes.

3 of the 7 currently on council have only run and won once so far. 2 more have only run and won twice. Chapman and Wilson are the only two long standing members of council.

Alexandria City Council turns over quite frequently.

There's plenty of turnover, much of which is incumbents choosing not to run again or for another office. It's a pretty thankless job!

What isn't happening is incumbents losing because of a pro-development position, or challengers winning due to their anti-development position. One semi-recent exception is Allison Silberberg, who won about 37% of the vote while two pro-development opponents split the rest.

Which may happen again in this election with Peterson, Gaskins and Jackson. Because no one is deciding between Gaskins and Peterson or Gaskins and Jackson. It will be interesting to see if Gaskins totals beat the combined totals for Peterson and Jackson.
