Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Yep. The decline in the school system goes hand in hand with the decline in the county. Both are a result of the one-party rule. The ‘progressive’ Democratic politicians have run the school system into the ground. They clearly don’t care about our students and/or our students’ safety. They prefer to espouse progressive policies (Defund the police! Sanctuary county! Eliminate SROs! Restorative Justice!) that have made things so much worse over this past decade. Our kids don’t have a chance. |

-1000 I feel just the opposite. My kids are doing great. The real problem is parents who take no responsibility for their children and expect the county to raise them. |
+1. The school system is broken because the family system is broken. No adults want to admit that and instead just blame schools instead. |
The problem is you belive that large systems such as a school district shouldn't bear responsibility for insulating children from bad parenting. That is exactly what we pay taxes for. There will always be bad parents. The school needs to have basic safeguards so violent teens can't bully, harass, assault and murder the children of good parents. |
Wrong. What is your plan to fix families? You just admitted in one sentence that schools are broken and then said that they shouldn't be responsible for the children in their care. |
MCPS can only do so much. Your expecting them to fix world problems isn't reasonable. |
When you say schools can only do so much, what are the things they can do? |
Don't know but I agree with the PP. These parents are nuts and just like to complain about everything. |
+1 on breaking it up. It's way too big. They've lost control. Studies show that school shootings are more likely to happen in larger schools due to anonymity & community not being as tight knit as smaller schools. |
This doesn't even make any sense. Even if you broke MCPS into smaller districts, it would not mean the schools themselves are smaller. Let's say you make BCC, Whitman, and WJ and all of their feeders into one district. That does not actually make each individual school any smaller, nor does it reduce class size. You are on a rant here, it's obvious, but you haven't even thought about it long enough to come up with a suggestion that would make a lick of difference. |
Its not going to fix things and in schools, like down county where there is a consortium, it would then take away school choice. All it would do is seperate them under different leadership, but you'd still have the same everything except if they built more schools. |
Clearly you need better sources if you believed the above. Parkland thought it was the safest city in Florida and then it experienced a mass shooting. Cities in the 80’s and 90’s at one point required opaque backpacks and metal detectors. Newton, Connecticut has a town population 5x smaller than the MCPS school population and yet Sandy Hook occurred. What in the heck still makes you believe that nothing can happen in your school??! Do we all hope and pray that nothing happens, sure. Do districts create new policies like lockdown procedures and practice them so as to be proactice, yes. Do they add cameras, and lock doors, and partner with law enforcement agencies and implement SEL? Yes, yes, yes and yes. Do they try to get mental health services and counseling? Again yes and yes. Do they have after school clubs and activities so kids can get mentoring and find a place of belonging? Yes again. Do they study things like bullying, racism, special needs, so as to create a welcoming atmosphere, ensure tolerance and decrease the reasons for animosity? Again yes. Do they provide education on drugs, sex, alcohol, violence? Yep. Schools alone can’t solve societies problems. |
Smaller district makes it more responsive to parents and the community. A common excuse that I have seen on here about MCPS is it’s size. They have all these campuses, therefore it’s hard to implement you name it. A smaller district takes that issue away. Schools don’t get smaller but the scope of responsibility gets smaller and the administrators and Board would certainly be more responsive. |
Right, and you can't build more schools in the places that need them the most badly because there are no appropriately-sized lots for sale. I mean, if folks want to use their precious time on planet Earth to try to change the Maryland state constitution and break up county schools, they can. They probably won't succeed, but they can try. However, folks need to understand that even if they get a smaller district, they won't get smaller schools. |
