How to feel less crappy

Anonymous
I'm 7 weeks pregnant, "morning" sickness (that lasts 24/7) since week 5, sore boobs since week 4, headache from week 6.... Today I just feel so crappy, and the fact that I have weeks of this left isn't comforting. I know feeling so crappy is a "good" sign that the baby is doing well, but knowing there just isn't anything I can do to make myself feel better just sucks.

Sorry for the rant, I was feeling bad that I keep venting on my DH, he's been amazing, and I know it kills him to see my feeling like utter crap.

Any ideas to help with the symptoms? I'm taking ginger (hard candies and chews), I have peppermint life savers, other fruity hard candy, "happy tummy" tea (ginger and peppermint), and even have been going to acupuncture (I fear to think of how bad the nausea would be if I wasn't going)... Preggie pops worth a try?

Also when did you start to feel better? At this point it seems like that's never going to happen, but I know I'm having one of those days.

My morning sickness was very mild, but did last until 12 weeks. I was told to eat a combo of sugar and protein to better manage the nausea. Lemon items seemed to be good, too. I especially liked a mix of lemonade and seltzer. Have you tried Zofran? I have heard it can work wonders for some with severe m/s.

As for the sore bbs, I am 18 weeks and still have them, though I am fairly large chested. I hope you find some relief soon!

OP Here - Large chested as well... Those don't bother me as much, can be a bit uncomfortable, but nothing compared to the nausea and headache.

I have my first appointment next Tuesday, and plan on asking the Dr. about Zofran. I've been lucky to only get sick once, but feeling nauseous constantly it's making life difficult!

Unfortunately nothing is a total cure, and yes, "morning" sickness isn't limited to the morning at all. It's really more like a hangover that never ends, without the alcohol.

I did get some relief by eating plenty of plain saltine crackers, and the "sea bands" are another common therapy that sometimes help. The nausea is worse on an empty stomach, so it's also a good idea to try to eat a cracker or two before you get out of bed in the morning, and graze on light snacks throughout the day instead of just eating three big meals.

As for how long it lasts, that's different for everyone. Mine went from 6 weeks to 23 weeks, but I'm having multiples so that can make it a lot worse. My OB told me that 16 weeks is about the time it goes away for most people. I think Zofran is typically just recommended for pregnancies where you can't keep food down (e.g. at one point I was throwing up 5-7 times a day) but you should definitely ask your doc. I know it's miserable, but it really doesn't last forever!

My midwife told me that trying to keep an even level of blood sugar by avoiding too much sugar and trying to eat some protein helps with naseau. Don't go too long without eating something. Sorry you drew a bad lot in the morning sickness lottery. Hope you feel better soon.

OP, I'm right there with you. About 10 weeks and feel horrible all the time. It's not just the constant nausea, but also the utter, total, complete exhaustion, to a greater degree than ever before. Maybe I'm just getting older?

For me, the nausea eases up between 20-24 weeks. I have Zofran, but I need to ration it, because my insurance will only cover a small fraction of my prescription. I save it for when I really need to be functional.

My midwife also uses an over-the-counter remedy that used to be available as a prescription: half a tablet of Unisom with vitamin B. It also genuinely helps.

I am also frustrated trying to communicate how awful I feel to my husband and kids, even though they are wonderful towards me. See it as an opportunity for virtue for your loved ones, and humility for you.

Eat when you can, what you can. My diet is pretty atrocious the first 20 weeks, but I take my vitamins and Floradix for iron, and exercise at least 30-60 minutes daily. I definitely see improvement when I'm able to eat a bit here and there steadily throughout the day, even if it's weird stuff (prunes, an apple with PB, a few French fries, oatmeal...).

Here's to both of us feeling better and forgetting all about this time!

OP Here - I'm realizing I'm feeling more and more like I'm getting a cold, and REALLY hoping I'm not! My diet has been just awful, but I've managed to get the vitamins down every day (except 2) since before I got pregnant. Today was a bit better than most, fresh fruit and some veggies made it down. Most protein's at this point make me gag, I'm hoping peanut butter will be my friend for dinner. I need some creative solutions in this department. Might try to make my "mighty balls" (choco/pb protein balls with oats).

At least I got to be excited without feel crappy for a full 10 days!

To the PP (15:28): Unisom with vitamin B to help with the nausea? Or the general feeling like crap?

I'm right there with you- I've already lost around 6-8 pounds and am really early on (about 4-5 weeks?). Right now, my only ally in the food department seems to be ginger ale.

PP- you might try eating protein rich grains, like quinoa. It probably doesn't have as much protein as meat or nuts, but might be easier to keep down...

Unisom with vitamin B is supposed to alleviate nausea. It used to be called Bendectin.

And I think I'm coming down with a cold, too

Let me join the pity party... 15 weeks and finally got soften after losing 6lbs in 48 hours puking bile!

It got better but I still have no appetite. Saltiness with mayo and gingerale are my friends. I do get 2 gummies vitamins a day and iron and vitD supplements.

My entire body aches, boobs feel like they'll explode! It's "I think I'll get a cold" for the past 3.5 months ARGH!

Sorry OP my only trick is to Sleep Sleep and Sleep!!!

B6 50mg 4x a day does help. I noticed when I didn't take it. The unisom and B6 I used as well when I couldn't take it anymore. The unisom did help me. I tried everything, nothing took it away. It WAS AWFUL!! I had all day sickness with both my pregnancies (different sexes) This time it lasted till week 17. I'm sorry. Whatever protein you can get down, eat it. Even if its fast food. Smoothies protein powder or greek yogurt helped. Cheesesticks and apple.....you know it really changed what worked or what I could stomach. I had to FORCE myself to eat. That was miserable in itself, let alon the constant sickness. Sleep really helps.
Hang in there!

Totally feel for you and everyone with this awful feeling...was sick from week 6-23 and on Zofran the whole time. Never felt worse. The only consolation is that it does ease up at some point and hopefully it won't be as long as it was for me. Odly enough, my second preganancy with a girl was worst than my first pregnancy (also with girl) when I was sick for 18 weeks. Oh the fun. Just keep telling yourself it means the baby is growing really well and try and hang out around newborns to keep you excited and focused on end goal. That was the ONE thing that helped me!

OP Here - Thanks for all the suggestions, I might try the vitamin B route, there's a Whole Foods near my office. I'm a tad lactose intolerant, but my body doesn't seem to like heavily processed soy either, so which protein powder do you think would be easier for my body to handle?

I thankfully haven't gotten sick much, but feeling close to it as often as I do is even more miserable for me, it's like if I could just get sick I would feel better (even though I know that's not true).

*sigh*

Yes I do keep telling myself it's a good sign, but none the less I'm running out of sick days at work as well, I'm lucky to have a desk job more or less, but right now I'd love nothing more than to be laying in my bed!

OP, I totally feel for you. In addition to the other great suggestions folks have had, you could also try Sea Bands, which use acupressure to relieve nausea. I bought mine at Wegman's, but some CVS stores have them, too, and you could certainly find them online. I also found that eating a snack in the middle of the night was helpful in reducing some of the early morning nausea. I would make a pb sandwich before bed each night and have it ready to go for a quick snack.

Try to take things one day/hour at a time, as much as you can. Hang in there!!

OP Here - I have sea bands, the only issue is I'm not telling anyone at work (minus my boss, which I had to once I took off several days earlier on when the morning sickness first hit) for another 4-5 weeks, our office is on the warm side, so if people saw, they would absolutely know (3 new moms at the office this year alone).

Wonder if I could find more "stylish" ones that could be more hidden under other bracelets? I can't be the first pregnant woman with this issue
