Solar Panels

We need a new roof on our 100 yr old rowhouse in DC and are thinking about putting in solar panels. Anyone do this and how is it? Any info about costs, your solar installer, etc. will be much appreciated!

First you need to find out if your home is condusive to making solar worthwhile. Things like square footage of your roof, the pitch, and the amount of exposure. In our area you need as much western exposure as possible. Currently there is a company in the area that basically "leases" you the panels and their website will tell you if it's worth it verses your current electrical cost. I think it's SolarCity and I'm sure that if you Google them you will find it.

Solar City, SunRun, and a couple of other companies will lease you panels, where they get the tax deduction to cover the upfront installation costs, but whether they offer that depends a lot on state/utility incentives so it might be they will do it in Md but not DC (as an example).

Comment Cents Solar is based in (I think) Chevy Chase and may be helpful both for advice and for buying.
